I picked that up and looked at it just tonight!! I work in a library, and we have DVD's. Something about it caught my eye. I will look for it again.

A Christian we could all learn from.....
by sweetstuff ini just watched a movie about william wilberforce, who i had no prior knowledge of, great movie, amazing grace and given the large amount of debate lately on here regarding christianity versus atheisim, i thought what better example of someone who's religious beliefs drove him to make improvements for all of mankind.
i am not a christian, but i think if we all tried to more humanitarian like this man, only good could come from it .
he is someone to me, that embodies all that christanity should be, by his actions.. perhaps he would have become the same man, without christianity, perhaps not.

Are We Kind Because It's the Right thing to Do/Or Because "God"Tells Us To?
by flipper inin seeing the " debates " the last couple days of religionists debating with atheists i couldn't help but start a thread on what i have noticed since leaving the jehovah's witnesses religion.
personally just to set the record straight on my views personally i consider myself a strong agnostic, perhaps a weak and learning atheist, if that makes any sense .
while in the witnesses, i was always annoyed ( for 44 years i might add) by some who considered themselves very " spiritual " being kind to others in a facade kind of manner.

Wow, some surprising answers here. I personally don't believe that if you need a fear or a reward to be kind and loving, that you are actually being kind or loving. I love people. Period. We are all making our way through this sometimes crazy, sometimes scary, sometimes beautiful life. I want to share the beauty, and ease the pain of anyone I come in contact with. I'm not saying it always works out that way, or I never get short tempered, but that is the goal. I have worked in customer service my whole life in one way or another, and my own personal goal, has been to have people walk away from me feeling a little lighter. I like to imagine that the next person they come upon will get some of that lightness too.

What has Changed the most? This board or your perspective?
by AK - Jeff inwe seem to go thru 'phases' here of 'i'm leaving because the board is changing' threads.
there is certainly a microcosm of social-evolution involved with any structured community, and that evolution may create in certain people a need to 'move on' [though often they are back rather soon after].. my assumption is though - in looking at the past threads and social environment here - that not much has really changed.
there seems to be a flux of energetic change at times.

I realize no one here is familiar with me, but I have been a member for 2 years now. I stopped coming here about a year ago, when there were several threads I found both depressing and offensive. Since then, I have changed. I realize which threads are likely to depress me, and just don't go there. It seems to me, that this board has something for everyone a real smorgasboard There is a place for everything. Isn't that what the different headings are for? If it's serious doctrinal talk, there is a place for that, politics, relationships, etc. etc. Seems like it's all covered, and if there is a thread that is going to push your buttons, just don't go there.

SATAN WORSHIP?
by shell69 ini've been several months out now (da'd in feb 07).
i took to wearing a pentagram , since i really do believe in these five main elements to life.. however, as you will know the pentagram is also reffered to as 'star of satan and various other things.. my point is: as far as the witlesses are concerned, i worship the devil since i dont worship jehoobah.. but!.
i would rather be a worshiper of satan, who everyone knows can be a bit of scumbag at times, but at least i know where i stand with him, than worship a god who proffesses to be the only true god, yet devastates his followers when they realise the true extent of the lies of his apparent earthly organization.. so i wear my pentagram with pride!.

Being satan is a creation of the christians, I'm afraid I can't believe in him either. That nixes any worshipping.

Anyway, I don't remember a single bit of sports talk when I was growing up JW. Nothing, except my family played golf, and my dad watched it. Is or was there some sort of frowning upon it by the org?
By the way (Dinah), I cry every single time I hear The Star Spangled Banner in person .

Holidays - How do you feel?
by pratt1 inas holiday time approaches, many of us ex dubs have mixed feeling going on in our head.. are you happy and excited because now you can celebrate the holidays with family (maybe) and friends, or are you depressed or just ambivialent about the whole thing?.
it took my a few years just to feel comfortable wishing someone a happy holiday, and a few more years before i actually celebrated a holiday.. now i celebrate every holiday, and i am always excited about the event, although i don't place any spiritually/religious meaning towards the event and i just enjoy the chance to socialize with family and friends.. what about you?.

I absolutely love the holidays. I get into it more than most of my "worldly" friends. To me it's a celebration of love, peace, family, food, winter. I love the smells and the lights and............. well everything.

We're all connected- Spiritual Atheism
by nvrgnbk inas you know, common theists believe in a literal "god" who supposedly created and rules the universe; while common atheists reject the idea of "god" altogether.. generally, spiritual atheists are people who do not believe in a literal "god" (thus the term "atheist"), but still consider themselves to be (often deeply) "spiritual" people.. for spiritual atheists, being "spiritual" generally means to have thoughts, words, and actions that are in harmony with the idea that we are all, in some way, connected - that the entire world can be thought of as one entity made up of smaller interacting entities.. therefore, spiritual atheists generally feel that as they go about their lives striving to be personally healthy and happy, they should also be striving to help the world around them be healthy and happy.
this empowering concept is referred to as "wholistic ethics".. although spiritual atheists do not believe in a literal "god"; they generally recognize "god" as an important and powerful symbol of the inter-connectedness and one-ness of the universe.
they see that, individually, everything in the universe is a part of "god"; and, collectively, everything in the universe is "god".

We should start a Church. We'll call it the "Temple of the Taoist Jedi-Spiritual Atheist"
Sounds good, sounds good. Ok, now we are going to need a piece of land to build our temple on. Oh and who will be in charge? I guess we'll need a group for that. A committee...........
