many also want to put jehovah's witnesses, mormons, and scientologists into this group.
i don't agree with that because there is one main difference between true cults and high-control groups like jws:.

we accepted all of jehovah's witness teachings as a total package, it was "the truth".
there were no cracks in our armor that would allow other ideas, doctrines or thoughts to seep in.
Funny, sometimes I wish I had not been born into witnesshood, because I think there is a possiblility if I had belonged to a more luke warm religion, I might have been content, and never have thought about it. But as it stands, I looked, and I looked and I looked and I looked. I am now sure there is no god. There is however personal responsibility and a rather beautiful world out there.
this was the book we studied when i went to prison in 1967 at seagovilled federal correctional facility near dallas.. the babylon book, we called it.. it is where i first encountered fred franz's mania for specificity.
franz was the lone ranger prophetic mouthpiece for jw's for a long time and pounded out on his typewriter an amazing array of weird books.

Dinah I'm very sorry. I can only imagine how this all must have felt. I log in so infrequently, that I have to pick an choose my reading. But I got a hold on this and could not stop. I can only say that the one thing I noticed throughout, is the caring and giving nature of those on this site. It was quite amazing.

I lustily attack the US military leaders, and Blackwater. Why? Because they are a representation of me to the rest of the world. I have a RIGHT to. They are supposed to be working for me and my fellow Americans, but at the moment they are working for a spoiled rich kid in Texas.
Why is questioning the current administration anti-American??? How do we keep our freedoms but to question the men in charge? They aren't jehovah or America anymore than the governing body is, they are just men. Having been "born" into it, I'd have to say a good 7 or 8, some days 10. I look at it like a loaf of bread. Someone put poppyseeds in the mix at birth. I now know I'm allergic to poppy seeds. How can you remove all the poppyseeds from a loaf of bread, and still have a loaf of bread?
