A JW woman/relative told me that back in the late 60's, the JWs would go to the Go-Go dance clubs. Her husband "made" her go. She walked out when she saw the dancers with covering on their nipples only. Her husband and the others stayed, and reasoned that the dancers were not naked so it was art. Husband was later disfellowshipped for other reasons, and the whole congregation was closed. No one was disfellowshipped for going to a "go-go".

I'm afraid I'd be single for life
by ohnightdivine inthis is quite embarrassing for me to share, but as a 30+ year old single female i have lingering doubts as to whether i can still meet a decent man and get married.. you all know how difficult it is for sisters to find an appropriate partner in the congregation.. and now, all the more so that i've learned ttatt.
i still am bound by low self-esteem, and i do have trust issues, especially with men.
i am very lonely and so i just keep myself busy with work to avoid depression (although it is also a great source of stress).. any other single females out there having similar thoughts?.

I had similar problems to you.
I had to figure out that I was a catch too. I bet you have a lot of good qualities. Write them down, and look at them periodically.
Realize that the men (and some women) in the WTS are likely loony tunes pretending to be good people. I think alot of JWs come into the religion from an abusive or neglected past. They get no real pyschological help. The pressures inside the religion to be conforming, mkae even the sanest nutty.. And, it makes many really off. Remember, the JWs have a high incident of mental illness. I have a sibling in the "Troof" who told me that she wouldn't marry any man in the "Troof". Some elder had his wife mysteriously die on a cruise ship, and then married another sister a few weeks later. I remember many of the "good men" beat their wives, or were just cocky bastards at least. Realize, that the pier you've been fishing off of had alot of stinky fish full of bones.
Realize that outside the JWs, are alot of mentally balanced people. Yes, there are loony's too. But, there are alot of smart, witty, independently thinking "worldly" people.
Look at the people who are around you. Note the ones who are happily married for a long time. Put snapshots of them into your mind.
Get outside and find a hobby. There might be some men for you to meet there.
Meeting and dating men (or women) is a journey, and not always a destination. You may have to go to thousands of dinners to find the right guy. Enjoy the dinners and dates out. Don't get hooked into that the (first or second) man is going to be your next husband. I think most JWs are really trained well to not date, but just say "I DO" far too soon.
Skeeter (happily married for 20 years). I don't know anything about on-line dating.

Detroit International Convention, June 6-8 - IS the public invited?
by Faithful Witness inmy mom was worrying out loud, about inviting the "public" to this event.
she told me they were announcing that people were not booking their hotels fast enough, and "we don't want to make the jw's look bad!
she told me about a promotional video they all watched, full of propaganda about the ford field house and all the arrangements that had been made for transportation and parking, and the city of detroit.

*****UPDATE*****(with question if anyone went to it)
I saw in the news that the convention had 45,000 people in attedance. Is that low for an "international Convention"
Then, I wondered what the capacity of that stadium, Ford Stadium, was? It's 65,000 people . . . upwards of 80,000 people for some expanded seatings. Does anyone know if the JWs changed the seating? Were there empty seats? How many regular JWs are in the Michigan and surrounding states? If there are 8,000,000 supposed JWs, then why wouldn't this stadium have move people in it?

I hear that a recent talk was about taking care of one's aging parents. I agree. Generally, kids should take care of aging parents. But, isn't it funny coming from the Society's mouth?
Wasn't it the Society who told us kids to not plan for our parents getting old?
Wasn't it the Society that told the parents that they would never get old and die?
Wasn't it the Society that allowed sisters and brothers to beat their kids in the Kingdom Hall or at Assemblies for not sitting still for hours?
Wasn't it the Society that told elders to not discipline family abuse situations becuase it was a personal matter? Then the kids lived in an abusive, but "Christian" home?
Wasn't it the Society that allowed pedophiles to prey upon JW children? Wasn't it the Society that silenced the parents from reporting the abuse to the authorities? Isn't it true that children blame their parents for not protecting them from pedophiles?
Wasn't it the Society that kept followers from going to college in a world where a college education became indespensible in a changing work environment, now robbing many of the financial ability to care for their parents?
....
Isn't it true that 67% of JWs leave upon reaching adulthood and only a small handful retun? Isn't it true that the WTS has told parents to treat non-believing children badly and apostate children very badly?
***
So, now the Society tells the elderly that their children are bad if they are not there for them 100%. . . . when the parents were not there for them.
The old bumper sticker comes to mine. "Be nice to your children. They will be changing your diaper one day."

Misquote in the Creation Book
by ILoveTTATT inmy dad came into the jw's because someone studied the "creation" book with him.
it pains me deeply that he sent me an e-mail recently saying that to keep the peace with my mom, he will stop communicating with me as much as possible.
i should communicate with him only if i have an emergency.. it upsets me to no end, but i cannot do anything or much about it.

Real reason for new arrangement
by TweetieBird ini apologize if this has already been covered, maybe someone can post the link.. what is the real reason for the society forgiving all loans for kingdom halls and just giving the money for new ones?.
-
skeeter1
Personally, I think it mainly has to do with a shell game. Turn a 5 year outstandign loan into a perpetual giving arrangment.
As a charity, they don't pay taxes. But, if the IRS/other governments wanted to try to reclassify them as either a "for profit" company or as a 'foundation' becuase a large majority of their business structure was lending money for interest and amassing real estate and cash. It isn't soup kitchens and half-way houses to help the poor. As a for profit entity, they would fall under alot of banking rules and the interest revenue would be taxable. As a foundation, interest revenue is taxable. So, I think the WTS is afraid the government (either US or otherwise) is going to reclasify them. To protect the interest stream, best to make it/call it something else.

If you can afford it, your daughter needs help dealing with her mom. I can understand saying, "No X if you can't go (to school or even to church) today." But, yelling at her the whole way and then acting like Sister Christian is abusive. Your daughter, still a kid, is going to think that she did something wrong.
It would be great if her mom realized her issues and went to a shrink as well, but I think that's a cold day in hell.

The more off your comments are, then perhaps the more they will leave you alone. Nothing threatening, just really off & wierd.
Horses do this. Some horses try to overpower the person. But, if the person starts acting like a monkey with their arms, and doign some random, jerky movements with their body . . .the horse backs off. It's like the horse thinks, "Hey, this person ain't right." Same thing with people. I heard a comedian say that when someone comes up to him kind of ticked off (like in a traffic situation), he is goign to say, "Hey, you're wearing my jacket. I haven't seen it for months. Did you come into my house and steal it?" And, the agressor will leave. I live in a close-close community. There are those I don't care to be around. I do the similar things. It works well.
