so i finally decided to get my a** to the library and read some real research on cults.
the book i'm starting with is "psychodynamic perspectives on religion, sect and cult.
in the introduction they mention margaret thaler singer's definition of a destructive cult as an organization in which:a leader claims divinity or special relationship with god.
If the Wt leaders announced that 'A' had started, like Koresh did, the witness ilk would react in much the same way, IMHO. They would quit jobs, hide out with other JW's, and wait to die or survive. And whatever commands came from the GB, they would follow to the T. I can't find a true difference between that and the way the Davidians worshipped Koresh.
They did announce that and that is what happened. Several times. Remember the call for more Colporteurs (1925)? Remember how some were selling houses and quitting jobs to finish out the remaining years in this old system as pioneers (1975)?

this may sound strange, but do jws have any specific teachings on body piercings?
i know that mormons do... they only allow females to have one piercing in each ear and then they must wear "tasteful, modest earrings"... in other words, i don't think they're wearing big hoops or dangling chandalier earrings... but what do jws think about piercings?
my boyfriend's sister got her eyebrow pierced... and her "jw" parents encouraged it.
Did we scare Kristyann away?
i guess i should do this in some beginning way, i am new here and still learning my way around the site.. i was raised in a divided household, and my mom taught us in secret.
when my dad found out the insuing religious wars pretty much marked me for life.
but i was imprinted with the wt.
I have been enjoying your posts. I take it I can count on many more?
Welcome!!!

i think it was paragraph 18 or right around there.. the gist of ithe paragraph was, "some will lose faith because our predictions failed, some of our stuff doesn't make sense, or someone treats us like crap".. the answers were just a riot.
i couldn't help but wonder if some weren't faders.. "i remember when i started in the truth, i thought, this stuff is crazy, but i just knew it was the truth because where else could i go".
"where else can we go" (i would like to point out that this is hardly a ringing endorsement).
Indeed, though you might like to note that "clean-cut" does not mean the same as "clean-shaven".
Jeffro, that's so true. In fact, to the Galatians Paul wrote that he wished some of them would get themselves "cut" (KJV) and he wasn't talking about shaving at all.

i am trying to do the "fade" for the sake of my wife and family, but it is getting extremely difficult.
my wife's cong.
is even more nosy than most.
Yeah, it's been a while. I've been so depressed that I just want to blow my brains out. I really need to unload all my negativity with a caring soul like you.
Or a slight revision on Scully's theme:
"Yeah, it's been a while. I was so depressed that I just want to blow my brains out, but when I stopped going to meetings most of my anxiety went away. I haven't felt so good in years! So, how are you?"

Yes. Ears is fine. Multiple ear piercings are done, but not encouraged. Other body piercings are "a matter of conscience" stated alongside comments that consider body piercings as mutilation.
I never understood the distinction, because ear lobes are part of the body, too.
Tatooing is also considered mutilation of the body among JWs.

just wondering if this happened to any of you.
did you ever go to the service group and be assigned to the different car groups.....and then....the sister that is assigned to go with you...decline and say...'i am just going by myself today and do my return vistits by myself'..... damn, i should have complained about that one!
it was very rude!
Safe journeys, tyrone. Keep an open mind and an open heart. Be true to your own personal relationship with Jehovah, don't let yourself betray that because of the rules of men. May God grant your heart His peace.

it may sound like a strange question, but aspects of jw behavior that are incomprehensible to outsiders actually make a morbid kind of sense when viewed through the lens of jw doctrine.
for example, about 10-12 years ago there was a single mother in my wifes congregation.
during the course of conversation, she learned that my wifes grandmother had recently passed away.
I personally know of four cases (out of the seven cases I personally know of) where the suicide victim left a note including that they didn't believe they would ever be good enough to survive Armageddon and they could only hope Jehovah would forgive them for killing themselves. I have had to struggle my way out of rationalizing my own suicide this way.
I think there is definite connection. In the case of suicides among DF'd/DA'd (three of the four), unless you know someone who was involved with the family you'd never know that they had been a Jehovah's Witness at one time.

see "church arson suspect sought.
jehovah's witnesses halls escape serious damage in forsyth, cobb.".
suspect is believed to be a disgruntled son of parents who attend one of the halls; possibly revenge motivated.. http://www.gainesvilletimes.com/news/stories/20051018/localnews/27929.shtml
It is a shame that some get so caught up in hatred that they are willing to go to such extremes. I am glad no one was hurt, but destruction of private property is not something I can be glad about. I would be glad if the congregation had dissolved on its own due to lack of attendance.
But burning down buildings because of the religion they are attached to is going too far. Plus, you are only arousing sympathy for the victims of the legally recognized crimes, however many ethical crimes may have been committed against you. It is never a solution and it won't accomplish the objectives.
I liked your post DannyHaszard!
