I've been faded for many years now. My parents are very active and often mention missing my phone calls because the meeting ran late or they went to dinner afterwards with the "friends." Yet, they never try to coax me back, or in any way plead wwith me to return before it's too late. They are elderly and I'm their only child. This strikes me as strange! Wouldn't a parent be pushing hard to bring their child back to the meetings, if they truly believed the end was near? Maybe they don't 100% believe in it themselves, or they don't think the end is near?

While You Were A JW, What Things Struck You To Raise Your Eyebrows?
by minimus ini'll never forget the time the circuit and district overseers told the elders that from now on the elders would be solely responsible for all judicial matters and that if anyone was going to get sued, it was not going to be the society.
at that point, the 2 overseers laughed outloud.
i knew we were going to get screwed for sure because the watchtower society was already setting us up.

When the CO was coming for a visit, all the rivaling elders would scramble to bend his ear first! They all wanted to give him the lowdown on the others they didn't like and win his favors. Snagging him to have dinner before he had even officially arrived in town was a coupe. My dad said you could tell who'd got to him first because of the way he treated you! My dad was always the talked about black sheep because he didn't join the mad scramble to suck up. I wondered how all the slander and backstabbing could be coming from the true religion.

The GREAT tribulation
by PoppyR indoes anyone else remember horror stories about the great tribulation and what they would do to the witnesses etc.. i remember this being the big topic of conversation for years, then like lots of jw doctrine, they quietly swept it out of the arena, and now it's never mentioned.
i remember pioneering with a girl who couldn't sleep at night and kept praying she'd be strong enough to endure it!
i actually have a talk on tape from a member of the gb where he spoke about ministers swinging from lamposts.. gruesome or what!!

They scared us almost to illness from the platform before 1975, helping us to "mentally prepare ourselves." We were told to expect electrocution and beatings and that praying to Jehovah would distract our minds until we mercifully passed out to escape the pain. I had such awful nightmares as a child! I had a beloved cat I talked about in the cargroup once. The elder turned around to me in the back seat and said, "Don't you know, your kitty is just an animal and wouldn't hesitate to eat your flesh during the tribulation if she was hungry?" I never forgot that remark.

Ours were always couples in their 60's and didn't stay very long before being reassigned. One Co had the most sinister smile when he fixed his stare on you. There was a suck up ministerial servant whose wife was expecting a baby. They named their baby girl after sister CO and made sure everyone knew that's what they were doing. (Can you say, big points?) She was a snotty unfriendly woman, but this made her smile a little.

I agree with Juan Viejo about some elders being scary in the mental aptitude department. My poor Uncle by marriage was very friendly and likeable. He was from the deep south, had little education and did odd jobs. But, he and my aunt were avid meeting and field service attenders, and most importantly, they gave parties! He was so anxious to make elder and finally did. He was old fashioned and narrow minded in his views of women's roles and had no children. Those poor people who had to abide by his decisions- he had no idea what he was talking about! My exjw friend at work and I shake our heads about our elder co-worker. He needs lots of new light (dim bulb, lol)! I said, "Ohmigod, C., and he's sitting on a comittee meeting tonight!" It's really not funny...

Jan 1st WT: Reaching out, Higher Education and Providing for one's needs
by truthseeker inwell, as a nice start to the new year, the jan 1st watchtower article, "how firm is your trust in god" blasts those who live comfortable lives, those who don't reach out, and those who pursue higher education.. definitely, they are taking a harsher stand, having completely painted themselves into a corner.. i highlighted the interesting comments.
i did not include all the text for each paragraph, just the main points.. .
1 a young man wanted to be more useful to the congregation.

My father "reached out" for those thankless "priveleges" for forty years! He ran his a** off. He's 75 years old now and has some health issues that take up a chunk of his time with doctor visits. He got sick and tired of the backstabbing and rivalry among elders and stepped down to attend to his health. The feuding was just too demanding. When others see this sort of garbage, they don't want to be ministerial servants or elders. You'd have to be nuts! I still don't see why they don't realize that little education equals little income, equals little donations coming into the Crooklyn coffers, duh! Aren't they shooting themselves in the foot?

Should people try to speak the language of the land when visiting?
by JH inas most of you know, i live in quebec (90% french) and i was at the convenience store a moment ago.. there was a lady from ontario in her 50's who stopped at the conveniece store to ask the clerc for directions in english.
the girl at the cash tried her best to speak english and give her the right directions.
then a client came in the convenience store and saw the lady talking in english.

I think it's kind of rude to expect to be spoken with in English when traveling to another country. They live there, we are only visitors and nobody has to cater to us. When my hubby and I visited Spain, I was all geared up to get us around in Spanish. Darn it, most of them wanted to practice thair English on us! We shared an outdoor table with a lovely French couple in Cordoba. They spoke Spanish and French, my hubby English and German, and I speak English and Spanish. We wound up using Spanish! In Mexico, everyone spoke English. Now, in London we had trouble! The accents were just fascinating to listen to, but if they talked too fast, it was hard. Then we were told the Brits get a kick out of listening to us too, lol!
