We were allowed moustaches in my former cong, but beards were definitely out. I remember onetime coming back from a holiday with a beard and I had a phone call from the school overseer advising me to shave as I had a talk that Tuesday and wearing a beard was iappropriate. He never said why though, but being a good little dub I complied. Later, as I was on my way out, I grew a beard to irritate them, though I hate beards really

What silly rules did your congregation make up?
by weinermcgee inelders were famous for making up stupid rules with no bible base at all as an ego trip i guess, what were some of yours?
i am not talking about the stupid rules that we all had to follow, just the congregation specific silly ones.. 1. having to button your jacket while on stage (this was later changed due to all the elders having a beer gut).
2. suits only or no privledges.

Did being a witness make you lose your social skills?
by AK - Jeff ini am out of the borg now about two years - but can say that i still have no social group in my life to replace them.
i participate in several activities that i consider social in nature - this board as example.
i have some 'acquaintances', but no real social structure in my life.

Your post sums up very well how I felt when I first walked away from the borg. I had no idea how to have a social life, having spent 9 years associating with JWs almost exclusively. Fortunately, some of my pre - borg friends hadn't given up hoping I'd eventually come to my senses, and when I left I started to get invitations to go out with them again. I realise that they were my true friends all along, not the conditional ones in the borg, I don't miss any of them at all, and now I'm da'd very few of them even acknowledge my existence anyway.
Jeff, I wish you well, you are experiencing what many on this board have or still are experiencing, leaving such an isolationist cult as the jws can be very traumatic, but time is a great healer, hang on in there my friend.

Please don`t read if you are a current witness and have doubts.
by void inwell i am new to the board, i have faded away from the truth lies about 6 years ago.
it still has an effect on me today, so much so i gave the warning in the title.
this is because one of the things drilled into me, was that its far worse to lead a member of the flock away.

I gave up a good job to wash windows and pioneer. I have a decent job now I'm out, but I will alwayx regret making the changes I did just so that I could spend all those wasted years spreading the lie.

I have read that, I found it thought - provoking. It's probably Aldous Huxley's best - known book, but the "Doors of Perception" is also worth a read.
