professor and i are going to the smokey mountains next week for white water rafting and hiking.

although i adore animals, i am a little nervous about the wild life i might encounter while on the hiking trails.

in particular i am worried about bears, cougars and snakes.

Cubs are always a bad mix. I have ran across cubs in the past, never saw mom until a little later (followed me for a distance), but as soon as I saw the cubs I headed back. The friend I was with, not a big outdoor person, thought it was cool and wondered why I was concerned and insisted on leaving. He found out a few minutes later as mom popped out on the trail about 200 yards away and followed us down the mountain about quarter of the way before turning back.

In my opinion guns are great noise makers, but if its a true maul situation you probably would not be able to get a shot off until the animal was on top of you, and even then a handgun, unless you get a lucky shot, won't make a difference as it tears the hell out of you. Even a human, mortally wounded can keep fighting for up to 1/2 a minute before dropping. At least that is my opinion... you would be better off buying a boat air horn at walmart for noise making or scaring animals away.

Walmart may carry them depending on the store location. You could probably find them at a sports store, military surplus store, etc. I spend a great deal out in the wild and have never had to kill or spray anything. Just be aware of your surroundings. Closest I came was being cornered by ring tail cats - whole pack of them. Nasty bastards but they were protecting their young. Just backed up slowly kept them in my eye, never turned to my back, and found another route when safely away. I think the furry critters are just as scared of us as we are of them at times.... Noise (your mere presence) scares most away before you even see them... they will always smell or see you long before you see them. Now if I were in grizzly country, thats a whole nother ball park...

Been 50 feet from a mountain lion hunting rabbits - night time event. Was actually very interesting, rabbits scream like little babies when caught by a predator. Mountain lion had no interest in us... just checking out the fire and the other animals (prey) drawn by the fire light.

todays last landing of the space shuttle atlantis, and the ending and retirement of the space shuttle fleet,signals the end of an era in manned space flight in the usa.. i feel obliged to bring to your attention, the man who put the the usa at the forfront of the space race, and put the first man on the moon, and was the brains and driving force of nasa, that would result ultimately in the shuttle programme, the construction of the space station, and the hubble telescope.. who was he, and what was his background ?

well his name was wernher von braum, he was a german soldier, scientist, who attained the rank of sturbannfuher in the ss, he was one of the leading figures in the development of rocket technology in the nazi regime, developing the v2 weapon, the first icbm.. he and his team of german scientists, were captured near the end of ww2 and taken to the usa, there they escaped the war trials, and von braun, the former nazi officer, was put in charge of the space programme, set up by president kennedy, he and his team of former nazi scientists designed and built the saturn v rocket which took men to the moon in july 1969, i was 7yo, my father insisted on wakening me up, to view the looner landing, i am glad he did, and now 42 years later its over, and some of our thanks, if not all must go to,wernher von braun, german ss officer..

Most of the things we take for granted today - medicine, surgery, transplants, jets, rockets, etc. can be given credit to wehrmacht machine 70+ years ago.

Make sure you stock up on a few items. For the snake issue, boots or snake guards that go up to your knees - the guards are pretty cheap. If you have a gun that is always a good thing - I tend not to blast something until other options have been exhausted - but that really depends on how much time you have. Bear mace is awesome and unless you pissed off momma bear (be aware of cubs in the area and head the opposite way while looking for momma) it will repel them. Don't leave any food or bait in your car, on the porch and make sure any trash is kept in a bear proof can (most cabins have these). Have fun, don't be too paranoid - good feel for the area is to call the local ranger and ask them about wildlife conditions activity for the area you are staying in.

' fair comment i'd say.

but jesus didn't say 'paradise' earth.. now i know some of you don't believe in the bible (which i respect), and i'm not after a debate.. what i'm interested to hear is how you would refyte that jesus was not talking about a jw 'paradise earth'.

Matthew is interesting. It almost makes you wonder... if a cyclic global calamity came about, would not the survivors be the "meek"? Would they not be the poor, the humble, and most importantly would you not be "meek" walking out into a new age where only a few survive? You may find all of this BS, but from the extensive research I have been doing I have come to the conclusion that the Bible, as many, many other texts speak of, were warning/reminding the reader of a cyclic cosmic event that affects man very harshly. remove the "god" factor, the spiritual factor, etc. and read the Bible texts as the exist, using them in conjunction with other non christian works.

Prodigal is correct. I think more people should research this. Hell, for years scientists said that the "photon belt" was BS, now they are saying we are going to enter a very dense, highly charged portion of the galaxy, that only comes around every 13K/26K years. The concern is that massive energy discharges could basically render humanity back to the 15th century, AND affect lif as we know it.

Ask yourself, from a modern perspective why build the Svalbard seed vault? Why have they been working on a soil bacteria (that was just entered into the vault last week) for ten years that can induce rapid nitrogen levels (1000's of times higher than normal, and faster) into STERILE soil??? Lots of shit going on...

Thanks. I actually stopped stirring after you mentione the Co2 issue. So I really only it stirred it maybe twice. I did smell some white wine we had from the store and it has the same smell so maybe its all good? Racked to a carboy last night, that was interesting. Ended up using three painters 5 gallon socks (sterilized) to strain the pulp, etc out. I actually had quite a bit. The solution in the carboy is already starting to seperate, but the liquid is a tanish color kind of like murky water... hmmm. Oh well, we will see where this goes. Need to get some labels for my brew once it is ready!!! Thanks again!

NEED SOME HELP!!!!

Its been about five days, pulled the lid (bubbling has pretty much stopped). tested with a hydrometer and its slightly below 1.00. I have noticed, and I really can't tell if it is since I never have done this before, but it has an odd alcohol, maybe slight vinegar smell (like I said not really sure if its vinegar or not). I plan on taking the pulp out tonight and racking. I talked to a few people who have done this before and they said that the smell is normal, but I don't know and I'm freaking out that I fcked something up!!!!!!!! HELP!!!!!

The solution, after stirring is a murky clear slightly pale white/tan color.

I hope I did not fck this up. I followed the instructions to the letter and made sure everything was sterile!!! If I did fuck up at what stage will I know for sure????????????????????????????? THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why the fetish with NICOTINE???

i have smoked, i quit, but now enjoy alternatives such as e-cigs, snus, and even the gum.

i find that nicotine has a nice mental enhancement, has several medical benefits and actually may help individuals to relax and focus.

now the question is this, why does the wts have such a fetish with nicotine?

Ban it??? Are you crazy? Since when does the government have the right to tell a citizen how to live, oh thats right in a socialist Eutopia. Drinking water can kill you just as fast as most "poisons" - everything in moderation. Who cares what jesus would do... figment of the imagination, just like pink unicorns...
