I just came across the same story on MSNBC.com:

This just goes to show that neccesity is the mother of invention.
philadelphia hospital offers 'no transfusion' surgery to all

... so when he found out that pennsylvania hospital offered a third option - once only available to jehovah's witnesses - it was a relief.

okay, i know this might sound like an obvious question... but in all reality, why are so many jehovah's witnesses hicks?
why does it seem that there are so many in rural areas?
i hope this doesn't offend anyone... i don't really mean it to be an insult to any of you, cause obviously i consider most of you a lot smarter than some regular jw (or some stereotypical hick).
I guess it kind of validated my point that an awful lot of JWs are hicks... ALMOST (not all, but almost) everyone that responded was from a rural area! I asked the question, and it was answered by almost all rural people themselves! That kind of reinforces the point. I think that they meant to argue my point, but in reality they actually just confirmed it.
Actually kristyann, the city folks wanted to chime in too, but they couldn't figure out how to talk into the computer and make words come up on the screen
i actually learned to doubt.
the info presented there served to open my eyes to practices that i never knew were acceptable---like.
segregation in congs.
Did they tell you at the end of the school to "watch out" for the post PSS blues?
Yes, I seem to recall that when I attended in '91. I actually enjoyed the school. We had a couple of older, but lovable CO instructors--not the grouchy stick-in-the-mud types.
One was a former Zone Overseer in the South Pacific--he had the most hilarious stories to tell of adventures with the locals. One time he and Milton Henschel had to meet with a tribal chief who had ordered all JWs off his island. They negotiated with the chief, his sons and other officials for hours. According to tribal law, if the chief's order was not rescinded by midnight, the "offenders" would be picked up physically and thrown off the island into the ocean. It was a close call but they eventually persuaded the chief to change his mind. As far as what we actually learned, it was mostly just a lot of review and basic suggestions, no real great insights or revelations. One interesting thing: I found out later that one of the young sisters who had attended the same PSS began partaking a few years later. Now I really feel privileged to have gone to school with one of the "chosen ones".
.
all the elders i knew were married, wonder if power in the congregation attracts women.....
I knew of a CO, last name Skinner, who came straight out of MTS and into the Circuit work. I think he was 28 or 29. He always had flocks of young eligible sisters following him around at assemblies.

Given the sensitive nature of the reactions to this topic, perhaps we can infer that most EX-JWs are hicks. (I'm kidding)

i got this email in 2001 from someone i don't know.
i posted about it back then, but got no responses.
it is kinda a long read, but worth it.
Follow this a moment (we'll leave children out of the reasoning for now):(1) Anyone who is not a Witness at Armageddon is going to die eternally.
(2) Anyone who dies BEFORE Armageddon has a chance at resurrection, because their sins are paid for.
(3) It takes six months to upwards of a year to become a Witness if the student works at it.
(4) It takes a few minutes to kill someone.
(conclusion) it is much more efficient use of time to go on a killing spree than to preach to people.
I figured this out when I was 12. There are Witnesses who reason this way, and viewed from inside the cultist mindest the logic is flawless.
Sorry but you once again display your fundamental misunderstanding of what MOTIVATES most JWs. This entire scenario is pure rubbish, and will never happen.
i was watching this national geographic program called "the end" the other day.
it showed different events that could end mankind and possibly the planet.
in each one, there is true in possibilities and they never showed an example of god destroying the world.
First of all, excellent question!
I used to dismiss the potential for asteroid impact as a ridiculous Hollywood storyline. Then I took an astronomy course at the local community college and learned just how real a threat this poses. However, assuming there are no serious impacts in the near future, mankind will probably develop the technology to identify potentially dangerous objects and divert/destroy them before impact. So I doubt civilization will end this way.
No doubt there will be future disease pandemics, but mankind has repeatedly weathered these in the past and I see no reason why we wouldn't do so in the future. Same with earthquakes--I can't imagine a scenario where the number and severity of earthquakes would be enough to end life as we know it.
The black hole-particle accelerator idea is interesting but it reminds me of some of the similar predictions of potential doom when the first atomic bombs were being tested--probably more science fiction than science.
I'd say the single greatest threat is nuclear self-anhilation. Or possibly destruction or alteration of our environment at a rate faster than we can adapt to the changes.
Otherwise the Earth will continue being hospitable for life until it cools down sufficiently for its liquid outer core to solidify. Once that happens it will lose its magnetic field and eventually most of its atmosphere--ending up similar to Mars. But that still gives us billions of years to evolve physically and technologically--so who knows what might happen between now and then.
jws lives are regularly put on the line by their religious beliefs or by the rules made by the wtbts.. if they become sick or injured they cannot accept for themselves or their loved one a blood transfusion that may save their lives.. if they live in an intolerant society, they may not purchase simple papers that could prevent them being tortured or murdered.. they go regularly to the homes of strangers and speak to total strangers and risk life and limb.
some have died because of this very practice.. so, are jws the ultimate modern suicide cult?.
i can't think of any religion, other than the suicide bombers of islam, that believe strongly in martyrdom, as the jws do.. how many jws could be dying every day because of the wtbts instructions?.
Suicide cult? A bit over the top don't you think.
Suicide cults WANT to die--JWs don't. There's a big difference.
Of course you could make a case that they have a bit of a martyr-complex, but in this they are certainly not alone.
i posted this on another thread, but got no response.
why do jws claim to not celebrate christmas and/or birthdays, but will accept gifts?
why don't jws celebrate christmas/birthdays?
AuldSoul--I'm not an apologist for JWs, but neither am I a weak minded fool who feels the need to go along with the crowd. I call it as I see it--plain and simple.
The hateful vitriol which you and certain others in this forum spew out against JWs on a personal level says more about your own demons and personality flaws than it does about JWs.
The fact is, regardless of what you say, JWs truly believe that celebrating certain holidays is wrong, and therefore out of conscience they choose not to. Decent JWs who are offered gifts or other well-meant gestures on such occasions graciously accept them and don't feel the need to make an issue out of it. That is not JW apologetics--it is reality.
i am on here a lot.
leafing through posts, taking the time out to read individuals' profiles, their topics.
i like to gain insight, get perspective on what it is like to be "on the other side" i guess you can say.
Maybe awareness of that fact kept us from lingering in selfpity or insisting that everyone around us listen to our stories. They may well have their own to tell.
Excellent point. I recently followed a link to this site: www.xfamily.org and spent the better part of a day learning about the so-called "Children of God" cult AKA The Family International. If any of you think we had it rough as JWs, you should read about what many of these kids went through.
