sitting down with the family and popcorn to watch The Wizard of Oz every year
This took place in my congragation too, sometimes several families getting together to watch.
Today, I would have to say "Harry Potter" would be out of the question.

in my country (eastern europe) it is viewed mostly as "unexemplary" , although many kids have harry potter dvds at home, but nobody talks about it .... at circuit assembly one speaker warned, that "some might be tempted to watch a movie, with a little witch .... (of course it is very dangerous and we must stay away!!!)".
when i started my departure several months ago, i made sure my son has all movies on dvd and i openly talk about it with dubs who visit our home - how nice the movies are - ... nobody so far dared to react.... albert .

Let the children decide.
by angel eyes inok, im putting my neck on the line here but ive always believed that children should be raised to make their own choice, if to serve jah or not.. i wasnt ever forced to believe in anything, any religion etc, although my background is very complicated.. anyway, hubby and i have always thought that how can a child decide if they dont know what other things are, ie birthday partys, halloween etc.
so, our children are allowed to choose if to go places etc.
last year our little boy said he didnt want to go to a halloween party, this year he said he might.

Just to chime in here, I have to ask ...
AE, have you given any thought to how it would look to the very people you go out and preach to in the door to door work ?
If, and that's a big "IF", one were to listen to you, study, come to the Hall and later find out that witnesses do not do Holidays, etc... what are they going to think ?
Wouldn't they say, "But, AE's son attended my son's birthday party a few months ago, or AE's son was at the school's Halloween party", so how can it be wrong ?
Aren't you suppose to be careful how you walk so as to be an example to the very people you witness to ? How would you justify your, or your child's behavior to the newly converted person ?
Just my 2 cents.

As A JW Did You Care About Old JW History, Old Light & Flip Flops?
by minimus ini used to look at the old stuff as info that the witnesses were progressively understanding.
i didn't hold it against the witnesses if they changed understandings because after all the 'light was getting brighter and brighter".. as time went on, it did start effecting me.
there were too many things i'd let slide by when i was younger that i just couldn't ignore any longer.

If The Society Could....What Else Would Be Considered "Improper" To Do?
by minimus inrecently there was a thread about the evils of "social networking" for witnesses.
facebook, my space and other similar sites are "worldly" and to be avoided.. before you know, nearly everything will be considered unacceptable for a christian witness of jehovah.
let's have fun and go to extremes...what else will be a no-no?.
