who still find it strange years on to dive straight into your mail meal without 'giving thanks'?
i say main meal, because dad's prayers were always considerably lengthy before a main meal, and are an institution in every jw household.
even now after a few years i'm just about ready to tuck in when i find myself saying a simple thanks under my breath.
Perhaps the reason for the lengthy, out loud prayers, is to do with pride and "top show". Something that really focuses on them rather than God. Some may be hypocrites?
One recently bragged to me about how he can usually come up with a good prayer before a meal, all unrehearsed. I bet Jehovah was really impressed!
i personally don't really believe in it, well certainly didn't see anything yet that would convince me otherwise.
but browsing wtbs cd-rom i've come across quite deliberate reference about ancient ufo sightings which are intriguing.
even though later article goes through usual wtbs reasoning that tries to put a lid on any inquiry by "faithful christians" i cannot but wonder if they are themselves actually believing it.
Yes they do believe in them, but like everything else, they are satanic demons pretending to be from other planets.
One of the few certainties in my own mind is that no extra terrestrials have ever visited earth in flying saucers.

i went with some in my congregation for a couple of weeks when hurricane andrew hit florida in the early 90's.
we slept on the floor of an assembly hall there.

My view would be that in the scenarios described, both JWs and Catholics would be taking the un Christian standpoint. Perhaps we should try to imagine how Jesus have advised us to respond in that situation.

i bet those that have a mystical nature might have some interesting things to say as well as you science buffs.. i think he was very introverted,,had great intuitions,, a very lively imagination,,and had perhaps experinced enlightenment perhaps not as much as some mystics but quite abit atleast that's what i gather from the recient thread i started which has some quotes of his ideas about spirituality.

in the last month i left my job of 15 years for a new company (better benefits, room for advancement, yadda yadda).
i'm pretty excited about this new job - and it's a very large company.
there are over 4,000 employees in just this one branch division that i work in.
A good debate, I can see both sides and have been made to think some more.

Quite often, staff for whom I am responsible fall out with each other, and don't speak. They often say stuff like "my employer can't require me to talk to people I don't like, so long as I do my job..."
Where I work, such views are considered unacceptable, we can and do require people to show common courtesy, respect for each other. I usually quote chapter & verse from our performance standards, competency framework etc. They are requested to comply, but if they don't we require it...
I had to issue a formal warning recently over this sort of issue. I work for the British Government.
