WHAT IS QUINTESSENTIALLY ENGLISH?
by Dansk inthis is actually something that fascinates me and i'd like your own opinions on the subject.
i list here things i feel are quintessentially english (with apologies to the scots, welsh and irish as they have their own uniqueness).. first of all, it's got to be a cup of tea (yes, i know it wasn't originally made here, but it has become an integral part of 'englishness').. cup of tea.

Holidays: How do you refute the Exodus 32:4-10 argument
by Check_Your_Premises inthe reasoning book says that in exodus 32:4-10 that the israelites were punished for renaming an egyptian religious practice "the festival of jehovah".. they apply this to their list of arguments against christmas.
is this a very good argument?
are there any good arguments that refute it?.

Attention Elders: Could we get the list of talks, and maybe even some....
by Check_Your_Premises inof the outlines for said talks.
posting here probably wouldn't be the best thing, but it would be nice if we could get them up at reexamine.org.
for those who never joined, or don't go to the hall regularly, yet have loved ones who do, it would be nice to know what the guy is going to say.. cyp

Of course we should talk about all sorts of things here... on the other hand, if the only thing you talk about here is politics, maybe there are some other places better suited. It doesn't give me the red ass one way or the other. I was just trying to help you be more happy.
I of course was not trying to limit any discussion. Everyone should feel welcome here, and I certainly don't mind any new thoughts or subjects.
On the other hand, I have found that everyone who doesn't agree with me is stupid.

The Watchtower transforms people into wussy !
by Genesis inhi there, i was just thinking about the whole thing.
when your are raised as a jw you cant have girlfriend or boyfriend and you must "feel that the other are superior than you", you must be very humble.
youve become an socially inadpted wussy.

I would have to agree with the title of this thread, (except I would have said "wusses" instead of "wussy").
I can totally corroborate this with what I have seen. I see tons of young adults that are total candy asses. Live at home. Sleep until noon. Completely incapable of talking about anything interesting.

This probably belongs in the politics section?
Also, if some are mostly interested in political discussions, there are other websites that might be a better source.
If you are an American conservative/republican/libertarian/hate the clintons, you could check out www.freerepublic.com
If you are an Amercian liberal/democrat/socialist/hate bush, you could check out www.democraticunderground.com
Both have all sorts of people and posters. They range from ignorant, fanatical true believers to the informed, reasonable, yet opinionated. Here we mostly just try to deal with all the JW in our lives.
Regarding Rush and stupid comments; I suppose if you disagree with him politically, just about everything he says would sound stupid. And likewise if you are a conservative he might seem to be the ultimate source.
Regardless, keep in mind that much he says is very tongue in cheek or even schtick. He might have been messing with you. It might make some feel better to imagine that he is simply stupid, but reality is you don't usually get that successful unless you know alot about something. I am not saying he knew what he was talking about in that or in many other instances. But he ain't stupid.

What weird things have you read in the bible?
by stillAwitness inthe fact that nimrod's name means: "he stirred up the whole earth to rebel"
and yet ezra's name means: "help"
what caused nimord's mother to name him something that had such a negative meaning and yet he turned out to be just that?

I was reading through some of the old Jewish law.
One that made me chuckle was the one where if a womans husband is fighting with another guy, and she reaches up and grabs the other guy by his little buddies, her hand has to get cut off or something like that.
I guess what struck me as funny, was that this was apprantly something that came up often enough, where they had to make a rule about it!

Check Your Premises was pretty close to what I was expecting. I have a feeling that we probably have a lot in common, but as with most meetups, there never really is enough time to talk with everyone at length. He was so clean-cut, he could easily have passed as the most *spiritual* of the group - at least if a JW were to judge based on appearances...
Yeah, I thought of putting on a suit and showing up with a cheap faux leather briefcase just to freak everybody out.
I never could have pulled it off.
Yeah, I guess Jourles was pretty much what I expected... except I figured that he would be blonde. Everyone else pretty much fit my expectation. I knew blondie wasn't really blonde.
Most spiritual of the group? Yeah, I guess it is a good thing that a JW wasn't making that call!

A tell tale sign of a true believer is they want to draw the world in black and white. You know you got it really bad if you think only your group doesn't think that way, only the other group does. Of course by making those distinctions you have drawn the world in black and white. Only your group is good. The other group is bad.
The most athiestic, leftist, liberal can be just as intolerant and dogmatic as the reddest necked, cousin dating, back woods, snake charming, earth was made in six days 24-hour days fundamentalist.
If you don't beleive me, just read this post.
Now some folks might think it is funny for me to post such an observation when I am so adamant that muslim fundie terrorists must die. Well that one is real simple. It isn't about right or wrong. It is just about living or dying. No matter what their gripe is, no matter what we do, we can't talk them out of it. Some folks just need some killing. Hows that for black and white!
