Raising children without a religion - thoughts, advice?

almost ready to take the plunge, but have held back for years because of topic.

husband and i have not been active for many years and no longer consider ourselves jw's.

we also have no desire to be part of an organized religion.

I think that its much more important to raise your children to think for themselves and formulate their own beliefs. Any fool can teach a child a religion but the aim should be to nurture them to find their own way and respect them for it (even if it might conflict with your own beliefs).

Whether they be atheists or polytheist they are equally able to live good fulfilled lives if they are given strong social responsibility and the right moral compass.

I dont see why there has to be friction between the believers and non believers - does it matter?

What type of person are you attracted to now?

i was just thinking about this the other day, about how my ideas of a romantic partner have changed since being a jw.. growing up, i thought i would marry a very upstanding jw, we would pioneer together, do missionary work, have children, see the world.

(never had any thoughts about bethel, though.

) so what it boiled down to was a stepford husband, up tight, not the least bit sexual, closed minded bore.. so now that i have grown up, seen the world, been married (and actually picked a good man the first time, although it didn't work out), i just contrast that with what i am attracted to now.. i like them open minded, earthy, i love artistic types because i am a published writer, hair doesn't matter to me (long/short, bald, etc), challenges convention, very sexual, still like a traveling man.. i am just curious if you anyone else can compare and contrast how their ideas have changed since breaking out the group-think of the jw organization..

Yeah totally the opposite of what I would have been attracted to as a JW.

Sexy, Intelligent and not afraid to call bullshit when she sees it, earthy, spiritual, passionate, full of expression, must also like trudging round stone circles and have a love of the land and nature. The shallow stuff: dark hair, blue eyes, and curvy.

Sexual Harassment

i've had something happen to me at work and i just need some opinions .... i work at a store where i am the only female employee.

we were short handed these past two weeks because someone quit and the new guy doesn't start until monday so they got a guy from another store to come fill in.

i hardly know this guy except for him talking to me about business related things.

No big deal! If it was persistent then maybe! I've had some mean mean women on a never stop road to undermine in whatever way they can in ways tricky to put down as harassment - evil intent!!
And Ive had far worse by far talk from man to man that you just get over and get on with!
To moan about every incidence of this type is another example of PC, IMO! Agree it is distasteful but then so is costing someone their jo b for a flippant remark! Are we all back in the school playground or did we ever leave? Just my take on much of society . Adult kindergarten!

No disrespect but its not for you to draw the boundaries as to what is and what is not a big deal, one womans banter can just as easily be another womans sexual harassment and the line has to be drawn subjectivel if adequate protection is to be afforded. Also too it is irrelevant as to whether or not it is a one off act or part of a continuing act as the former when sufficiently serious can undermine dignity at work and this is just the sort of comment that does that. Flippant regard for someones dignity at work is serious and not only that, is a barrier to womens rights. It should be a disciplinary offence and if he worked for my firm his feet would not touch the floor. Just my thoughts. G

Ian (Dansk) in hospital with CMV

hi, everyone ---.

claire asked me to let the board know that ian is back in the hospital and expected to be there for about a week.. those of you who have been following the weekly vigil thread know that his cmv has returned.

the virus is not responding adequately to the tablets, so ian needs to be medicated intravenously.. please keep ian and claire in your prayers.. marjorie.

Sirona & DB74 are having a Baby!

for those that know us and that have been following our jwd love story...we cannot contain the news any longer, we have known now for over two weeks but wanted to wait until we had the last early pregnancy scan to confirm everything was ok. .

today we witnessed a miracle in the making and the ultimate in creativity - the scan confirmed a strong heartbeat and considerable growth since the last scan a fortnight ago.. we are going to be parents .

WILL JW's MURDER as an organization during an "invisible" Armageddon?

someone (voideater, i think...) made this comment on another thread, facetiously:armageddon has arrived!

but...invisibly.... this was my reaction to it, and i'm curious what people think.

The murders started a long time ago but they dont use armageddon as an excuse - instead they create a flimsy dogmatic rule from an ancient dietary requirement that existed for the Jews initially.

Murder is Murder however.

the problem with making judgements about religion is that it is all too easy to dismiss the value of its ( usually) unsupported beliefs.. guys like dawkins and hitchens extol the value of atheism - as if they could prove that a life without illusion is somehow "better".

related to this, we may also think that objective facts should overcome true believers simply upon their confirmation.

life just doesn't .

I agree, we do need fantasy, myth and legend. We need this as much as we do reality. Its a question of balance!

Myth and Legend can inspire, teach, or generally provide an escape - theres nothing wrong with it at all.

If You Were Wrong About The JWs, Maybe Your Current Beliefs Aren't True

if you're here, it's likely you were once fooled by what the jws believe.. back then, i expect you thought you were smart.

you thought you could tell if you were being lied to.

yet, they got past your mental defenses and sucked you in.. knowing this, how can you be sure your current religious beliefs are true?.
