Maybe I'm dreaming, but......is anyone out there willing to scan the book and sell the scan to us ex-non-elders? I would love to have a copy of the whole thing....I'm sure others would, too. I scour ebay, but no luck.

Quick Quiz: First with the right answer wins!
by cab1000 inquestion:.
while in the "truth", what was the first thing said when a fellow congregation member bought a new or used two door car?.
there is no prize.

Thank you for posting that question. I put a comment on my web site about jws discouraging members from buying 2-door cars, and I got literally a very nasty onslaught from ex-jws claiming I was lying! They said it was never even mentioned.
Me, I remember it being mentioned in pioneer school and in many a talk in the local congs and assemblies, too. Anyone who owned a 2-door car was brought in the back room and chastized by the elders. Everyone else called them weak and unspiritual and dogged them until they either faded or sold the car. It was a big deal, not something I made up!

Scriptural basis for "judicial committee"'s?
by AlmostAtheist injw's at least *try* to have scriptural backing for all their little doctrines.
it may only be two obscure references to two cultures a thousand years apart celebrating a birthday, but at least they've got *something*.. have you ever known them to pony up any sort of biblical reference to justify the formation of a "judicial committee"?
i know they have their pet shunning scriptures, but that's after the committee meets and decides to axe you.

This is why I can't believe they are truly intentionally a cult.
LOL, is any group intentionally a cult?

Is Baptism a contract?? If so, are minors able to give legal consent??
by coult9056 indear friends,
i believe the judicial committee wheels are starting to turn.
let me explain why.

I agree with the principle that minors are too young to get baptized. I?m with ya to that point only.
Child baptism has been legal in the US for as long as the US has existed. Religions have been allowed to baptize children for millennia.
The issue of contracts/baptism has been brought up a zillion time by ex-jws.
According to http://www.law.cornell.edu/topics/contracts.html : ?Contracts are promises that the law will enforce. The law provides remedies if a promise is breached or recognizes the performance of a promise as a duty.?
I?m sure an attorney could better this answer, but just using common sense here?what contract did you enter? Where is a copy of the written contract? In what respect is baptism a contract that the law will enforce? If you want to sue them for breach of contract, what was breached? Did they ever promise to provide you something in exchange for your baptism, that wasn?t fulfilled?

It is fascinating to me that they haven't done away with the archaic cult-like requirement to report one's time! The entire premise of it is to allow humans to police the dubs, instead of letting the big J worry about who's worthy of salvation.

Should we tell my sister in law she can appeal her DF'ing?
by AlmostAtheist ingina's sister and her husband haven't been df'd yet, contrary to what we were told.
she will be announced this thursday.. she's not aware of the "organization" side of the organization, gina and i both feel she is unaware of her right to appeal.
if we tell her, and she appeals, i think she stands a decent chance of having it overturned.

Interesting. I wasn't aware there was a formal appeal in place. I thought people just wrote letters to the WTS when they thought they had been wronged by the local elders. I always thought directly contacting Brooklyn was horribly looked down upon and would be, in itself, reason for DFing.
Thing is, from what I heard, the WTS usually backs up whatever the local elders did. On the one hand, it probably wouldn't do any good for them to appeal to the WTS. OTOH, maybe she will get to see how corrupt and hypocritical the organization's leadership is by going through the "appeal" process.
For me, the scrip "you will recognize them by their fruits" was the turning point for me when people didn't act like Christians. Even the dubs say other dubs "stumbling" them because of their failure to live up to that scripture is a major reason people leave the b0rg. Perhaps the failed appeal would help "stumble" her.

Did you believe that "the world loves its own?"
by squinks inwhen you got out or were helped out, did you believe that the world was really immoral and that people could do whatever they wanted and no one would care because the world loves its own?
-
rebel8
Yes. I thought all non-dubs were bad and trusted no one. It took me years to figure out who to trust and who not to trust. Things were so oversimplified when all dubs=good and all non-dubs=bad. After leaving, I was in shock that I had to actually get to know people in order to find out if they were bad or good. Then I learned there really was no need to find out of everyone around me was good or bad. Takes a long time to rid oneself of that thinking.

I thought that the WTS said it was ok to deal with da'd or df'd people on a business level when it's required, just not in social settings.
As far as I recall, that is the rule. Of course, it probably includes a loophole about it being a "conscience matter", and then goes on to say that those with strong consciences are more spiritual. This is just another case of the dubs saying one thing in official literature, saying it's left up to one's conscience, then in practice pretty much everyone does the most restrictive choice for fear they'll be deemed not spiritual.
A few yrs after I left the dubs, I was hired to work for an elder and ministerial servant in their business. They asked me if it would be a problem not talking about my experience with the dubs or religion while at work. I said no, and I asked them not to discuss their views either. They said fine, you're hired. Later, they hired a guy who was DFd (and in no way, shape, or form inclined to try to get reinstated). I asked them about that, and they said it was a conscience matter. They said they are allowed to greet him and talk to him, as long as it's business. So I guess some people do follow the actual rules. Of course, once they hired the DFd guy, the rest of the dubs started gossipping about them.

I think something major is missing from this story.
3 a.m.--maintenance worker discovers bag of parts
? a.m. or p.m.--JW sees person carrying bag of parts while passing out
propagandaliteratureDoes anyone notice something strange here? What time was it when the dub saw the person carrying the bag, and who was it?
If the dub saw the maintenance worker carrying the parts, why was he/she witnessing at 3 a.m.?
If the dub saw the killer carrying the parts, why did she not report it to the police? If she did, why was the bag not recovered until 3 a.m., and by a maintenance worker instead of the police?
