Super childish and disrespectful. The only way to truly triumph over the evil of the cult is to be better than them. Epic fail.

zodiac and the bible
by Crazyguy ini have seen and read plenty of stuff on the net that implies many of the things in the bible are actually refuring to the zodiac.
one example would be that in the new testament the 'end of the world' phrphrase is actually a miss translation and it should say 'end of the age' and that this age that is being talked about is the change to the new sign of the zodiac which occurred at about 125 ad to the sign of picees.
has anyone done any extensive research on this theory that ma y things referred to in the bible is actually talking about the zodiac signs etc.

It wouldn't be unbelievable if one set of magical beliefs had borrowed some ideas from another.

My views.
by ivanatahan inthis is more of an introductory post discussing my views and background than anything else, really.. i was, unfortunately, born into this religion.
my mom was, and still is, a pioneer (or as some call it: "piousneer"), and my father is an elder.
admittedly, up until a few months up to a year back, i was indeed a zealous "servant of jehovah".

IIRC, Bro. Russell did start out selling publications, and calling it sales. Not sure that really matters at this point. The org does make a lot of money and does not really use it to do good.
Congratulations on waking up so early in life. You've got less scars than many of us. You have so much of your life ahead of you.

Helping Grandma Move.
by exwhyzee inwe helped my wife's 83 year old mother move this weekend (30year regular pioneer).
she's having memory issues now and is moving into a nice little apartment built off the back of her (elder) son's house.
among a lifetime of memories, kids report cards, black and white photos of long dead swans etc., i found stacks of old society publications from as far back as the 1920's including bound volumes and rutherford books.

Officer Wilson not indicted in killing of Michael Brown
by Simon inafter a thorough investigation and weighing of the evidence the grand jury has decided not to indict the officer.. the reaction so far seems as predicted - people refuse to accept that the result represents justice despite claims that is what they wanted.. there is now violence and vandalism, including gunshots.
let's hope the police contain the troublemakers.. .

I agree with Marvin Shilmer's post on Page 1 of this thread.
I would add: Volunteer for jury duty.

Family Gathering ( or the day also known as Thanksgiving)
by Theredeemer inevery year on a certain thursday in november my family and close witness friends would get together, eat menudo ( hispanic stew) and other foods, watch football and then get dressed to go to the meeting.. sister so and so would bring her famous pie, bro and sister so and so would bring their gross punch and bro and sis so and so would bring mexican sweet bread.
sometimes we would go to "worldy" aunt's and pick up plates of turkey and fixins.. this was every year on a certain date, on a certain thursday in november.. this continued until my mom got alzheimers.
by that time i was married and had my own house.

They are setting arbitrary lines in the sand. Eating Turkey and stuffing on Thanksgiving: evil. Eating Turkey and stuffing the day after: perfectly acceptable.
Exactly, and it sounds familiar. Isn't there a scripture about it being ok to eat food that had been sacrificed to false idols? I can't find it atm.

Actually it just seems like junior high school. So immature. I'm disciplining someone for it.

It's all coming back...
by SoJo16 ini joined the board this month and holy cow, are there ever some interesting points of view here.. a bit about my background: my dad was an unbaptised born-in who nevertheless went to vietnam and college where he met my mom.
mom was lutheran, but dad told her the only religion he was interested in belonging to was the jdubs.
they married in the early 70s and were both baptized.

Welcome!
I find this board a crazy and wonderful place
That it is. Exiting the cult always involves turbulence, even if it's years later.
I've decided to be a bit more challenging to my mom when she makes comments about how bad things are in this system of things, or asks me if I still think about Jehovah.
Yeah, I tolerate NO incidental witnessing without responding. I have notified her if she does not bring it up, I won't, but if she does, she has opened the door for me to respond (and I will do it in front of whatever audience she chose to start it).
I say things like, "Are you reporting this discussion on your time card?" (Non-jws find it creepy that dubs report their time and counts of incidental witnessing. They feel casual conversations are just sales pitches and ways for her to get her numbers up. It puts them on alert.)
Or, "Yes things definitely are changing. Over the millenia, we've reduced premature death, disease, violence, ignorance, crime, and hunger. And even earthquakes are declining."
Or, "When I was a kid, they were teaching the preaching work would be finished by the end of the century--it's even in the publications--because Armageddon would be happening. Have they apologized or admitted their mistake yet?"
Or, "Why doesn't the hall do charitable stuff instead of selling books?"

There used to be a large "gathering" every year on Thanksgiving with a traditional meal and football watching. There was nothing different about it, except if you went to your relatives' to do the same thing, you were weak.
