PULP FICTION et al
by stillajwexelder inas you know, a loyal dub is not supposed to watch stuff like pulp fiction, basic instinct, last tango in paris -- what films which are classics have you now watched and caught up with which you could not watch when you were a witness -- saw pulp fiction for the first time this week - brilliant

I like Zombie movies too, I've also seen a lot of no-no horror films, especially the Exorcist and the Omen (though, the Omen was on TV and I wasn't watching it carefully --- so I missed most of it). I always liked being scared.

I hate them, they feel like something scripted, yet with horrible actors.

What's in your library?
by the_classicist inwhats in your personal bible or religious library?
let's see what i have... cambridge kjv (really nice, calfskin leather), cambridge reb (really nice, not as good as kjv though), 50 year old douay rheims (with annoying jw notes and written-in textual changes inside, courtesy jw great-grandmother), rsv-ce (imitation leather, looks extremely cheap), nab (imitation leather, looks better but sucky confraternity notes in it).
that's my bible collection (i got rid of the nwt).

I also have a pretty big wishlist of books I would love to include if I had them, such as the TDNT or the Dictionary of Deities and Demons.
I've got one of those too; the problem is that a lot of religious books are low production, so they cost more... like I'm looking at a bible commentary that comes from the University of Navarre in Spain that costs over 200$ US. Needless to say, I need to get a job.

I watched the Passsion, and I didn't think it gave the Jews any blood-guilt. Here's what the declaration Nostra Aetate (proclaimed by Paul VI at the 2nd Vatican Oecumenical Council) said:
True, the Jewish authorities and those who followed their lead pressed for the death of Christ;(13) still, what happened in His passion cannot be charged against all the Jews, without distinction, then alive, nor against the Jews of today. Although the Church is the new people of God, the Jews should not be presented as rejected or accursed by God, as if this followed from the Holy Scriptures. All should see to it, then, that in catechetical work or in the preaching of the word of God they do not teach anything that does not conform to the truth of the Gospel and the spirit of Christ.
Furthermore, in her rejection of every persecution against any man, the Church, mindful of the patrimony she shares with the Jews and moved not by political reasons but by the Gospel's spiritual love, decries hatred, persecutions, displays of anti-Semitism, directed against Jews at any time and by anyone.

Whats in your personal bible or religious library? Let's see what I have... Cambridge KJV (really nice, calfskin leather), Cambridge REB (really nice, not as good as KJV though), 50 year old Douay Rheims (with annoying JW notes and written-in textual changes inside, courtesy JW great-grandmother), RSV-CE (imitation leather, looks extremely cheap), NAB (imitation leather, looks better but sucky confraternity notes in it). That's my bible collection (I got rid of the NWT).
Prayer books, most I don't use, but they're cool to have: Anglican Breviary, Liturgy of the Hours, Christian Prayer, and a few others.
Doctrine: Catechism of the Catholic Church, Catechism of the Council of Trent, the Apostolic Fathers.
So, what's in your library? (a pun on that ING Direct commercial, where the Swedish guy goes "What's in your wallet?", get it?)

The org is going down----I can feel it!
by stopthepain in.
my brother called me today.he is 20 ,3 years younger than me,and out of the religion.he still has fear though that it could be true, but thats another story.. he told me he heard my mother and father talking upstairs.my mother said about the org "ive put 26 years into it,i think i'm done with it,i might just go sunday from now on".this is huge ,because she was a devoted nutjob witness.she made my life horrible for the 1st 17 years of my life.i had been trying to suddly tell her the truth about the troof, but i didn't expect this.i'm happy and yet i want to know where she stands with the borganization.. this along with what seems to be an outpouring of similar stories,i have a gut feeling the jehovahs witness mind control cult is on the brink of implosion.everyone is so burdened by it.the jig is up,gb,good riddance when you fold.the rank and file have had enough.my 2 younger sisters are on the edge of mental freedom.i hope they can fully get free of it.. this is a milestone in my families long and strange trip in mental enslavement!!!!!!!!!!!!

Elsewhere, thanks for that quote.
I remember going to my grandma's hall up in a rural/town area (only around ~50,000 people) and they were giving this talk about how important it was to serve Jehovahs full time rather than pursue other things. There was this guy up there giving his experience, it basically went like this: He was contacted by the JW while attending university, getting a major in Mathematics. He joins the WT and he quits school and starts preaching full time. His life now consists of suits from the early nineties, a janitorial job, and preaching work.
Everyone clapped really loudly (this was back mid/late nineties, perhaps after that) and everyone thought how much smarter they were for preaching and reading the WT instead of doing something silly like getting a degree (especially when the end is so close -- they focus on the end a lot more in smaller communities).
