Young People Ask . . . March 2012 Awake
by sizemik ini read very little wts propaganda these days, even on-line stuff .
unless it's for a specific purpose.
most of you will identify with that.. i perused this article while checking out something else and was disturbed by the manipulative reasoning directed at jw youths.

Review of Examining the Scriptures Daily 2012 absurdities
by jwfacts ini just endured the painful process of trudging through the 2012 examining the scriptures daily, looking for interesting quotes.
apart from being repetitively boring, it has managed to squeeze most of the watchtower's crazy concepts into a single book.
the comments concentrate on:.

What are the "Hebrew versions" of the Christian Greek Scriptures referred to in Appendix 1 of the New World Translation?
by yadda yadda 2 inappendix 1 of the new world translation is entitled "the divine name in the hebrew scriptures and in the christian greek scriptures "jehovah.
" - hebrew (yhwh or jhvh)".
it says in part: "to avoid overstepping the bounds of a translator into the field of exegesis, we have been most cautious about rendering the divine name in the christian greek scriptures, always carefully considering the hebrew scriptures as a background.

Matthew 1:18-25..."the virgin birth"...(seeking exegetical help)
by rick_here ini've been @ jwdf before, having been "referred" by an ex-jw i met at beliefnet.com.
this person said i'd find some folks here who are interested in the stuff i am.
namely, the "historical-critical studies of the bible" (not to be confused with theological liberalism, per se, which is a specific "movement" within the history of christianity).

Juxtaposition and Bible understanding
by Narkissos inthe "genealogy" thread made me think about the following: .
one of the big problems in reading the bible comes from its practice of simply juxtaposing different stories apparently relating to the same "events": the two creation accounts in the first pages of genesis, the flood narratives (although there is some redactional weaving there), samuel-kings // chronicles, and of course the four gospels.
our theoretic (=> spatially-structured) mind tends to put the stories side by side (synopsis) to compare them: whether we use the comparison to criticise or to harmonise, we actually build a third (or fourth, or fifth) story of "what really happened" (even if it is close to nothing) and then look back to see how the alternate narratives developed from it.

Literary structure/ chiasms
by peacefulpete inbeing very new to this type of inquiry i'd appreciate any inpute to refute or confirm the idea of mark's literary style including chiasms.
the word simply means 'intersection'.
in this case it is argued that mark like other literature of the day used a unique pattern of thought and structure that grouped sections into rounded out blocks where the end half mirrors or opposes the beginning half .

taste death
by peacefulpete inwe are familiar with the expression in mark 9:1 that some standing there "would not taste death at all" and it seems clear that the original hand of mark intended it to be a message of imminent return of christ.
later the line was reinterpreted as a vision of jesus in the so called trasfiguration.
my interest now is in the phrase "taste death" and how it was used by the gospel thomas.
