Is it true, or just familiar?
by Markfromcali inthis is a simple enough comparison, but i think it's a question worth asking with a thread of it's own, even if it's just for the sake of reminder.
whether it's believing the jws or anything, do we notice whether it is what's reasonable and makes sense, or is it just 'agreeable' because it's familiar and comfortable?
obviously the latter wouldn't be a wise choice.

electric scooters?
by Markfromcali ini'm thinking about getting one of those scooters that's like a skateboard with handlebars to use in conjunction with public transportation.
what are some of the practical considerations?
gas or electric, what kind of mileage/range, maintenance, etc.

silent retreat/meditation - input and output
by Markfromcali inthose of you who find it useful to meditate might be interested in this, although this would be a matter of training the mind rather than getting at the nature of mind.
i was listening to the radio this morning and some guy that was on had not talked on sundays for like 20+ years, it started out just as a voice issue but for whatever reason (and it wasn't religious) he kept it up until now.. i've done some silent meditation retreats, and obviously nobody talks for the most part but it got me thinking: usually the silence is bi-directional, that is you are not talked to and you don't talk either, but what if you did one or the other?
of course the pure silence is still valuable, so i thought maybe you can do it like this: .

hope and fear in relationships
by Markfromcali ina 'friend' of mine just dumped his wife, who has basically been supporting him probably more than just financially.
without going into much detail, lets just say his thinking is not very clear.
anyway, i feel pretty bad for her as it came as quite a shock, and although they are probably just incompatible it just got me thinking along these lines, and i found this in the book the heart of the buddha by chogyam trungpa.

disease and suffering
by Markfromcali inwe view our desire to get rid of disease as a desire to live.
but instead it is often just the opposite: it is an attempt to avoid life.
although we seemingly want to be alive, in fact we simply want to avoid intensity.

WTS as an example of impermanence
by Markfromcali infor those who are familiar with buddhism like siddha and others.. there was a post about fading of the 1914 doctrine or something, and it occurred to me: doctrines and teachings fade, members fade.. the wts is a great example of impermanence!
and in the long run, how long can they last anyway?

What is up with Kirk Cameron?
by Markfromcali ini think that's his name - you know the kid from that show growing pains?
i knew he was in the left behind movie and i think maybe another apocalyptic one, but then i saw him on some evangelical show talking about how to 'witness' to people, spouting a simplistic 'technique' of showing how people are sinners against the 10 commandments and then telling them you can be saved.. one thing that stands out is i could swear his acting in gp was more convincing than this spaced out kinda look he had in this show.
you know the look i'm talking about?

Books left out of the bible
by Markfromcali ini saw this show on the history channel last night about books left out of the bible canon - things like the book of enoch, gospel of mary, apocalypse of peter and such.
i was wondering if there is a book out there where all of these are published together in one volume, does anyone know?
