Funny things that happen at your Thanksgiving dinner
by pratt1 ini have 2 stories of accidents/funny things that has happened at our thanksgiving dinner.. when i was newly married, my wife and i invited 2 other couples over for dinner on thanksgiving, because "turkey was cheap" so we bought one - we weren't really celebrating a holiday, it was just that a turkey was too big for just 2 people.
we were in denial.. my job was to make a cake, something i had never attempted and since i was a ms and the "head of the house" i didn't need any help from my lowly wife.. i wanted to make the cake fron scratch so i used the recipe on the back of presto baking flour.. because i was watching football at the same time i was trying to make the cake, i transposed the directions for sugar and baking powder - 2 cups of sugar bacame 2 cups of baking powder and a tablespoon of baking pwder bacame a tablespoon of sugar.. i mixed the ingredients and sat down to finish watching the game as the ckae baked.
after about 15 minutes there was a huge explosion in the kitchen, the entire oven door had blown off and there was cake batter over the whole kitchen.. needless to say the dinner was ruined.. no thanksgiving dinner for us that year.. second story, not to be outdone, last year my daughter 20 years old was in charge of making the turkey for thanksgiving.

Holiday gift giving
by pratt1 ini have some friends who are still dubs, but they associate often with my family and we consider ourselves to be very close.. we agree not to talk about religion and so far everyone seems to honor this arrangment.. my friends have a young child who calls me uncle and i have a very close relationship with him.
every year i give their son gifts in november and a month before his birthday.. since i grew up as a dub, as he is, i don't want him to feel left out, and we bond over either building models, or me teaching how to ride his new bike, or learning how to play games on his "leapfrog".. his parents has also appointed me and my wife as guardians over their son if they were to die while he is still a minor.. what bothers me is that neither of parents seem to acknowledge these gifts (which are uually expensive) or purchase gifts for my daughter at any time during the year.. my motives in giving their child gifts is not to receive any recoginition, but i does make me feel that because of their beliefs about holidays, they should use some other occasion to at least send a gift to my daughter.. i decided against bringing this matter up to them, and i don't want to stop giving their son gifts, he's the innocent party here, but i just wonder why these dubs seem to have no sene of social ettiqutte?.
i am i being unreasonable here?

Father's Day
by pratt1 infirst, i hope all of you fathers out there had a great day yesterday with your families.. i had a great day with my wife and daughter, but i would like to share my experience with my dub mother and unbelieving dad yesterday.. i met my mom and dad at my cousin's home whose wife recently had surgery.
my mom and dad spent the day with them preparing sunday's meal and meals for the next few days.
as a side note my cousin was a dub in his teens but he left the borg at 16, because he wanted a normal life.. .

Drugs and the Borg
by pratt1 ina good friend of mine, who daed himself many years ago, finally decided to enter into rehab in effort to kick his heavy drug habit.. he is doing well and seems to really want to kick drugs for good this time and i am extremely proud of him and supportive of him in his efforts.. he did tell me something i found surprising, that i thought i would share with you.
in his group recovery class, out of 14 people, 6 are xdubs.
most seem to have anger management problems and a feeling of worthlessiness because of not being an active dub.

Career advancement and the Borg
by pratt1 in.
it occurred to me that there a lot of activities at work that as a dub you would refrain from participating.
not just holiday celebrations, but also chartiy events outings on saturday or even just going out for drinks after work with the boss and your collegues.. because of these things do you think your career was adversely affected and have you began to partake in these activities after you left the borg?

Relationships with on believing relatives
by pratt1 ini was wondering how many of you feel that your relationships with your unbelieving relatives has suffered because of the influence the believing relatives have within the family?.
in my case, my dad and i are very subdued about celebrating holidays including his birthday and fathers day, because it upset my super pioneer mother.. we always seem to give in to her wishes, although we discreetly exchange gifts and spend time together out of her sight.. my gut is to ignore her, but my dad has to live in the same house with her, and i know that she takes out her anger on him more than me, because she blames him for my not still being a dub.. do you have any similar family dynamics?.

Crash - The Movie
by pratt1 ini saw the movie crash yesterday and it was very interesting and though provoking.. it deals with racism, stereotypes and our perceptions of people and how it effects our behavior.. has anyone else seen it yet?.
also great performances by all.
a very different role for don cheadle, sandra bullock, thandie newton, and brandon fraser, but they were all excellent.
