grey smoke, white smoke - papal dynasty
by Crumpet inanyone care who gets made pope?
anyone read dan brown's angels and demons?
surely god could make the smoke rainbow coloured - with laser lighting in this day and age - just so we could be sure like?

It would be interesting if that German Cardinal is made pope so as to continue with a non Italian pope, following on the previous one who was Polish.
It took a while to break that long tradition of having only Italian popes. In ancient times there were some Greek and French ones but that was very long ago. -

JWs and early christians.
by greendawn inthe jws claim that they are a faithful copy of the early christian apostolic church however there are numerous differences between the two eg in the way christ was perceived, the apostles thought of him as a lord to be worshipped and be invoked, something that the jws loath doing.
and also all the baptised participated in the bread and wine ritual weekly, rather than a handful participating yearly .
does anybody know of any other differences in belief or behaviour or overall structure?

The early christians wouldn't for sure preach door to door after the emperor Domitian made christianity a capital crime in the late first century. The church policy at the time was not to seek martyrdom and not to avoid it if it became inevitable.
Only a few very fanatical ones would turn themselves in in order to suffer martyrdom, so the preaching must have been quiet and discreet evaluating carefully a person before trying to evangelise him/her, because a nasty person could nail them with the local authorities. -

Listener as I understand it you are not an elder now but still a JW, you expressed some uncertainty as to how your family would react (in a previous thread)so how did they react finally?
It's good that you realised what this religion is all about. Rutherford was a spiritistic medium he was in touch with angels he claimed were from God but when we check what they were telling him we can see that they were demons he was under their control and brought a lot of demonic influence in this org leading to cruel practices like shunning.

My father will lose his privileges if he attends my sister's wedding
by Goldminer inmy sister is planning on getting married within the next few months.her jw husband committed adultery and left her when their son was 7 weeks old.after getting a scriptural divorce she began a friendship with a "worldly" man and now this friendship has grown to a soon-to-be marriage.
this man studied with the jw's for a while but could see right through them found too many of their teachings didn't make sense so he stopped studying.he's made his stand with my sister and told her she can still attend meetings if she wants to.he's also a good worker and seems to really love the kids.he's not perfect but no worse than many jw husbands.
anyways, the elders pulled my dad aside on tuesday night and told him he could(could????!@#*?

How obsessed these JWs are with purity.... or how we see here another example of cultic manipulation a father controlled by feelings of fear and guilt inspired by the WTS, that programing in of fears: you will lose your position as an elder never mind your salvation for disobeying the FDS. Why not put something in the local paper regarding this so that people will know what this sect's teachings and leadership are all about.

A world for all of us
by greendawn inwhen people are with the jws one of the tactics they use to deter them from leaving is the fear of the world, with typical cunning they over-emphasize its negative things, down play or ignore its positive things, and make sweeping generalisations about its nature.
in reality the world has everything and you can choose what you want to be or make out of life eg you can be a self denying saint or a sex crazed womaniser and nobody cares.
that is the golden abundance of the world and it belongs to all and i reconnected with it after leaving the jws with that thought.

Daunt, putting up barriers is a necessity for the survival of the WTS it has to isolate its members from the world in order to maintain its hold on them, as it were for them it's a crucial political necessity and thus at the centre of their mind control strategy. A very good article on this (and general mind control tactics of the WTS) can be found at http://users.uniserve.com/~renford/persuade.htm

Logansrun indeed Jesus didn't think of himself as God but the apostles did think of the ressurected glorified Jesus as someone to be worshipped whether they perceived him in the Trinitarian or Arian way it makes no difference. The JWs have dethroned him from that very central position, they never say things like we are Christ's organisation/people, may Christ bless you or help you, let's honour Christ's name etc it's always Jehovah, Jehovah (and the early Christians did not even use this name) as if they are some sort of Jews. What is "tamales" by the way.

Leolaia so it is obvious that the JWs are a world apart from the early church and their claim of being its modern version is another blatant lie of theirs, even though they would fit in more with the jewish christian church and its emphasis on the letter of the law. Compelling all people to preach is for increasing the slave workforce selling their literature, and there was no intricate hierarchy with a number of levels of overseers and GB. There is no end to their lying.

Did You Ever Think You'd No Longer Be A Witness?

For me the critical doubts came about a year after baptism when I realised that critisising the society's teachings ( blood policy, imminence of armageddon) would soon attract the elder's unwelcome attention. They told me I should never try to run ahead of the FDS and all that crap. Being very young and cocky at the time I wouldn't have any elders putting a gag order on me, IMO all people should accept to be criticised and if they think a criticism is not fair on them they can always come and reason things out and disprove it. The FDS is no exception being imperfect humans they do make mistakes. That's when I began thinking this place is no good for anyone and gave up the FS. I became inactive and disassociated six years later.
