A question about the 44,000?

i studied with the jw's on and off for a couple of years and i could never get my head around the belief that 44,000 ( special ones) would be going to heaven and how they themselves worked out that they would be one of them?

i remember at easter one year i was invited to a 'special' meeting, i think they called it "the memorial" or something like that.

anyway, they passed around a goblet of what looked like wine and a plate of broken crackers and everyone just passed it around the whole room, from one person to the next.

They use this scripture:(The person is supposed to just know that are one of the 144,000 because their spirit tells them!)

They use this scripture but the reality is that after the token passing of the bread and wine with nobody partaking (except one) the elders will get together to discuss qualifications.Is he(she) one of US...No then they can't be annointed.

Are they "strong" in the truth or just a hanger on...no they can't be annointed. Are they DF'ed or DA'ed.I would hope not.

Did Rutherford Smoke?

does anyone know if rutherford smoked cigars?

would that be documented in any writing?.

we know that he enjoyed liquor, but whether he smoked or not is not clear.. --vm44

It is surprising how many JWs smoked until 1973. There were even smoking breaks at the meetings.

I rejoined just before this time. My brother and his wife had a baby. It was custom to hand out cigars and he gave me one.I smoked it and thought nothing of it. I happened to mention it in FS and a few of the brothers got a little excited about the whole thing. I was never reproved and no elders talked to me about it but I could tell they didn't like it...

my sister in law was just reproved the other day and my question is ,is this just like being disfellowshipped except in this case she isn't baptised into the cult ooops i mean the truth?.

the reason given by her is that she went on a date with a witness and the young spiritually strong man asked her to masturbate.she reported it to the elders and was formally reproved at the next meeting.i have to point out that she's had issues in the past with mental illness and fornication .. craig

Reproof will probably [always?] result in the loss of "provileges" like commenting at meetings, being on the theocratic ministry school, and the like.

Sounds like a reward to me...

Public reproof as far as I know still only applies to those who are baptised.They would like to beat those who haven't joined up yet and they in fact used to.The fear of lawsuits and political correctness stops them from doing it at the moment.Maybe this is "new light"™

Biblical Prophetic Years of 360 days in length

it is taken as an axiom by the jehovah's witnesses and the adventists that a biblical prophetic year is 360 days in duration.

but what is the origin of this idea?.

the bible itself does not define a "prophetic year" of 360 days, or any other number of days.. so where did the concept of a 360 day prophetic year come from?.

They figure that a "time" is 360 days and that seven times of 360 day "times" is 2520. So the Gentile Times equals 2, 520 "times" or years. But then they add 2520 to 607 and come up with 1914 which are 365 day years. Since it's already established that a "time" is 360 days, shouldn't the 2520 "times" be 360 days each instead of 365 days?

I don't remember them ever explaing this little slight of hand. It starts with 360 day years but "magically" changes to 365 1/4 days to get their 1914 date. I sure would like to hear how they said this was done....Anyone know..??

A brief History of Me...

i was studying with jehovah's witnesses during my college years.

i found that they somehow was able to make me understand many of the meanings from the bible that i had never understood before.

i had a clearer sight of what it was to walk as a christian.

Reading through the bible I learned that just because a King was evil did not mean that all of the inhabitants of that kingdom were evil, many still clung to what was good and kept doing good in God’s Eyes. And the opposite was true, if there was a good King, not everyone was practicing ‘good’. So as today when people in the leadership positions of the Jehovah’s Witnesses do sin against God, it does not mean that the entire believers are also doing what is bad.

I always found it strange that in the O.T. even thought it was the King who was "evil" it was for the most part the common people who suffered and died for the King's sins. They could not and would not speak against the "King" as he was Jehovah's representative for the nation.

JW's today are instructed the same way.It is a "sin" to talk out or disagree with the GB,WTBTS,Elders etc. Who will bear the punishment for not speaking out against the "evils" practiced by the GB in charge.I have a feeling it will be the R&F again.

Chaperones

richie's thread got me wondering what ever happened to the practice of chaperoning???

i mean really, was this just a regional thing where i grew up?

we had to have a chaperone always with the opposite gender even if we were old!

They didn't have chaperones at my old congregation but they really really wanted you to only go out in small groups,never alone.

A also recall a WT article about this time that talked about "dating" The first thing was that you should not date unless you had marriage in view. I was used to a "worldly" approach where you asked a girl out if you liked her.(I had just signed up again it the big push to "A" 1975 "A")

I asked a girl out that I knew but not that well.The first words blurted out of her mouth was" I am not ready to get married yet" I had a WTF moment but I quickly came up to speed on the quirky ideas of the WT.

I remember the same article on dating that even discouraged HOLDING HANDS cause that could lead to SEXXX. There sure were a lot of paranoid young dub sisters running around.

Dating= Marriage

Holding Hands= Might lead to SEXXX

Kissing= Would lead to SEXXX esp if that naughty old tongue was it there

The WT sure had and still has a lot of crackpot ideas on the whole subject.

When I was growing up, JWs never, ever thought of retirement. Armageddon will come before then. They didn't worry about pensions and savings, they fully didn't expect to need them.

Back in the early 70's I knew an elder who was in his mid 30's. He was talking all the time about his investments. He had stocks,bonds and RRSP's on the go. We all thought he was a bit of an odball as we KNEW the"wicked old system"™ could not possibly last until his retirement. I guess he was about the only smart elder around. Most elders I know have retired in poverty.

New Light

years ago just before my exit from "the truth" i had a chat with my father inlaw about changing and conflicting doctrines in the wt.. i happened to use the word wrong ....wow what a reaction i got.

i was reamed out on the spot.they are not wrong...they are never wrong...... it is "new light" .

in the next hour i could not get him to say or even think the"w" word.. it was very frustrating.

My Dad called me apostate for saying the Org has published falsehoods in the name of God. Does that count?

Sure it counts.The WT boys are sure a sensitive bunch.They don't like to be called wrong,false prophets or a cult and yet that is what they are. They have no problem putting those labels on everyone else though.

well i have had a life long dream to get a metal director...and i did yesterday,,,i am so excited,,,,,,with visions of finding that hidden treasure .

i am on my way out to the school field out my back to start my ventures.........in my research many many have found valuable items,,,,rings, coins, etc so wish me luck .

I think there were a few old settlements by Harrison Lake. Look along hwy 7 rather than hwy 1. I would try to get a book about the history of the Fraser Valley or do an online search. I could see you having fun doing that and also learn a little more about the area.
