An E-mail Exchange with an Elder

ever since i had become an atheist and started to listen to podcasts such as the one by sam harris or shows like the atheist experience, i began to think that it is my responsibility to believe as many true things and as few false things as possible.

in order to ensure that my beliefs are rationally justified, i started to follow logic, reason, and evidence.

i cannot say that all my beliefs are true, but i can definitely say that i make the efforts to ensure that they are at the very least reasonable.. i also became willing to debate people.

Thank-you Saename for the clarification, to my best understanding "unbaptized publisher" and " disassociated" are mutually exclusive terms as a disassociated person cannot "publish the good news" If you are deemed to be doing something terribly wrong then an announcement is made that "you are no longer a publisher of the good news" However if they allow you in service and accept a report then you are an unbaptized publisher in good standing, Complicated isn't it? Disfellowshipped for being complicit in someone else's sin - really?!

a close friend of mine who is pimo (only staying in for family reasons) in a neighboring congregation called me in tears tonight saying her dad (elder) is telling her he is seriously considering reporting her to her local elders and she could get disfellowshipped.. the reason?

because she is complicit in a gross sin, according to him, by going with her best friend (not a j.w.

) when the friend had an abortion.

Taking into consideration everyone's comments thus far,

My advice to the young lady who wrote in is:

You asked about Congregation action (elders)

If you want to go that route you will be at the mercy of 3 elders and their opinions that will probably vary wildly, if they vote to disfellowship you, you will have the right to appeal which will mean another Judicial Committee,

You always have the option to leave of course,

Either way you will be shunned, apparently you aready have an outside network of friends, this will help,

On the other hand, depending on your father and others, the whole thing could blow over,

I think you should not put off decisions regarding you and Jehovah's Witnesses any longer, as issues like this are going to come up again at any time,

Finally, what you did here in regard to your friend was yours, and your decision alone, and personally I applaud you,

Didn't Achan's family get stoned to death for "posession of stolen goods"? Oh, right, they were stolen from Jehovah! So unless we're hiding the proceeds from a Contribution Box™ we're Golden! Reminds me of the child abuse scandel, they are a law unto themselves (cult)

You folks who are at present Bible believers will be able to look this up, a servant of a heathen king was talking to a prophet of Israel, he was concerned that he helped his blind master bow down to an idol daily, The Israelite prophet told the servant to "go in peace" interpreted to meaning: in some circumstances don't worry about it,

So even under strict law there were exceptions to a rule,

In practical terms today, men come into these situations with their minds already made up,

I've already noticed that when normal people are faced with such a situation, they'll say in effect, "I may or may not agree with what you're doing but I'm not going to judge you, you're my friend, you need my help and I'm here for you :0)

alright.... so in another thread, most of us have been counseled for some lame stuff, and the responses range from funny to shocking.. now, let's focus on you giving counsel to others.

I was the one that would show up at (always sisters) houses to comfort the bereaved NO HUGS!! and provide encouragement and support otherwise, I always thought it best to mostly listen, tended to keep me out of trouble counselwise, the one thing that stands out about counsel was with my son, he wanted to see Jurassic Park and I prevented him, I did it because I didn't want to look bad with the prissy congregation who would give me trouble, I didn't want to stand up to them, it was a bad call and I regret it to this day,

June 2017 program - beards/mixed messages

nothing big here, just a couple small observations:.

on this month's program at about the 43 minute mark, after bragging about giving a little medical help to jws in africa, they make them 'pay' for their services by offering onscreen testimonials thanking the organization.

one of them is an elderly man who i think got hearing aids or something (i forget) and said that now he can hear the meetings better.
