the thread started on "an invitation to a wedding" with all its talk on manners got me thinking...... is there any other childless person out there that is tired of being invited to the birthday parties of friend's children?
i am childless by choice.
i have a large family with many kids, visiting me, making a huge mess of my house, bugging me for money to go to the store, waiting for me to drop off their gifts every year, playing pranks on me (i'll get those little suckers back), walking around with my shoes on, peeing in my bed, etc.
Book something on some of those days. Arrange to meet a friend you rarely get to see, reserve tickets for a show, be out of town on a short vacation. Go to the next b'day. Miss the next one or whatever. And so on. Plan the ones you want to skip and the ones you want to attend. Send a gift through the mail or visit the day before with the gift and give your apologies. There have to be ways out of your misery.

The Golden Age quote is not untypical. It was the 'science' of the time in some quarters. Check out this hilarious one from the Finished Mystery, p.228:

Before we're too hard on them, isn't that kind of science behind cranial bump-feeling and nose measuring, that was in vogue back then, a little like some of the 'off the wall' claims hitting the media now? for some reason the jws think the outbreak of world war i in 1914 is proof their prophetic calculations were correct.
I don't understand how they could survive without major - even disastrous - upheaval.

clarification needed about us education system and watchtower policy :-.
we used to be slightly puzzled by some articles printed in the publications such as "young people ask - should i go to school?".
because in england and most of the uk, school is most definately compolsory and enforcable by law up to age 16.. further education beyond age 16 is never refered to as "school" except jokingly.

my husband and i have been basically ignored for about 15 years by most of his jw family.
his mom calls once every few months, but only to ask for money (yes, she is a mooch).
both of his brothers are elders.

After they got off the phone, my hubby was elated, yet bewildered by these sudden turn of events. He is SO HAPPY to have his brother back it is almost painful for me to watch. ; I've got a feeling that if his brother continues with his Elderhood in the organization, sooner or later he will start treating my hubby like crap again. It's taken a lot for your BIL to break with established protocol and pluck up the courage to call your hubby. I doubt he'll want to mess up. And as sammielee said, "When a JW moves toward a 'wordly' person it could be because he is faltering and recognizing with shame how he has acted." I think that is correct. That was certainly what was going on with us - we were faltering and felt shame.
