  Hey Alan,

  The piece needs much work to get a clear focus, and that's what I'm having trouble with

  I feel like a student advising the professor, but I dont think it "needs much more work to get a clear focus". I suspect the 'focus' is more a matter of inspiration that will come to you at some odd moment. And when it happens the pieces will all fit together in your mind begging you to organize them on paper with urgency. That's when "much more work" will be required. I think you have something there, waiting for the moment.
