I love Christmas! This will be my fouth Christmas. The last two were on the East coast and they were White Christmas'. This year we plan to fly back, to her family for the holidays. Her family are non-wetnoses on East coast so I can celebrate openly...

I've got it - a Festivus celebration for XJWs - a Festivus for the rest of us! You know, the holiday invented by Frank Costanza from Seinfeld. An aluminum pole is so much simpler than a tree, and there can be an apostate Feats of Strength!

I love the Christmas season! I had thrown away all my decorations in 1970 so I didn't have a thing to decorate with. I didn't celebrate it for the first two years after I left the WTS, but it kind of "got to me" the third year and I didn't CARE what the JW neighbors thought!

I had such a blast buying all the "new" lights and gadgets, even my friend said that she got a kick out of me going from one aisle to the next looking at things like a little kid! Every few steps I was saying "Wow--look at THIS"! I enjoy the wrapping and the baking and the whole nine yards. I hate to take the tree down when its time.

I don't have any "little ones" to lie to.......but if I DID I wouldn't consider it LYING as such. It's a harmless myth that hurts no one, because almost everyone we come in contact with does the same thing. It's not lying to be vindictive or malicious, lying on tax forms, or juggling the books money in your office to hide money you've embezzled----it's just a "fun" activity that children enjoy. We ALL know what it IS and why it's done and I see absolutely NO harm in it.

Like with everything else---if you find it doesn't suit you---don't do it. If you enjoy it---GO for it!

    hugs,

I HAD Christmas as a kid, and I missed it. I'm tickled to have it back!

I think Christmas is a neat holiday. Wished I hadn't missed out on it as a child, and even more, I wish my own kids childhood hadn't been deprived of it.

About the only thing I dislike about it, is that some stores and radio stations begin too dang early with the music, shopping ads, etc. Gets on my nerves when they start in late October.

Never celebrated christmas, raised in the Borg and only been out a few months.

The idea of it has always fascinated me, but I never felt like I missed out on something. My parents anniversary was just after christmas so they always made a big deal of that, pressies for the whole family and all that.

I do believe that is is tooo comercialised and people spent way too much money on the whole thing. Whenever I told someone at the shops that I did not celebrate it due to religious beliefs they said what a great idea.

As far as getting the family together for christmas I think it's great but why do many families only do it at christmas time, shouldn't they get together as often as they can.

Having said all that I have no idea what I'll do for christmas this year, I'm hoping to spend it with my mum, she is no longer a JW and her new husband and his family get together for a BBQ and swap pressies, pretty low key. Would love to do that, take my kids too, see how they like it.

I would never go out in FS on any holiday----for the same reasons you mentioned. I thought it was extremely rude to interrupt people having company, dinners, etc and I always cringed when they'd announce the service arrangements "when they would find people home" that were usually working. UGH! Some "opportunity" to pester folks.

    I SO agree!!!

I love Christmas. My kids love celebrating. I love the smells, colors, lights, etc. I love to bring out the decorations and hang them everywhere. I like the additions of color in my house and I love to decorate the Christmas tree.

My kids have always know Santa wasn't real and they would ruin it for my friends children. Of course, the parents always appreciated that! NOT! The kids know the gifts are from us, and they know the amount of gifts varies from year to year depending on our cash availability. They are never upset when it is a lean year and they have always been greatful when it is a plentiful year. I think kids need to learn how to give. My parents celebrated their anniversary when I was growing up a Dub. I used to say that I didn't miss anything by not celebrating B-days or holidays, but really, I never had them growing up so how could I miss them. I am glad that we celebrate now.

The first year that my husband and I decided to go back to the hall we threw all of our Christmas stuff out. Everything that his grandmother made him over his lifetime (stocking, tree skirt for our wedding, etc.). I feel terribly guilty now because he always feels the loss at Christmas and she recently passed away. We had to say we lost it in a move.

    Zen,

    I couldn't disagree more.

aside from the reasons JWs give as it being a pagan holiday renamed.... Don't ya think if most every culture has this winter festival, it's an intergal part of who we are as humans...I mean this from a sociological not religious bent.

I do not like the fact that parents think nothing of lying to their children about this mythical santa claus I never did this, I always told my kids about St Nicholas...vs...Santa Claus...they still wanted and lived the fantasy...no harm, no foul, kids live in a magical world until 6-8 years old

and the constant hollywood movies making anyone who exposes the gag as an evil monster Usually it's because their reason for doing so is one of mallace, not concern for children...or truth....while giving children reasons to believe that santa claus really does exist after all...ignore your older friends who have been poisoned by the secular world.

I find it appalling to ever teach a child to simply expect people to give them things just because the calendar says a certain day. Ah, so you would be against birthdays too...or is it gift giving in and of itself you're against...that's kinda what the above statement sounds like...YA GOTTA EARN IT, NOT HAVE IT GIVEN TO YA>

I find the mindless devoution to christmas to be just as appalling as the brainwashing JWs do against it... I see people in my office acting like german clocks... the clock strikes easter and the decorate the office, strikes holloween and they decorate again...strikes christmas and more decorations.... Soooo, you're acultural then are ya? The human psyche is made for ritual, it aids us, comforts us, and grounds us. I'll put the mind set of those with ritual against those without any day.

then the frets and worries over what to get who and how much to go into debt over it. It's been several years since I went into debt for Christmas

I knew one lady who spent over $300 on a child less than two and was very depressed about two weeks later when the novelty wore off and only very inexpensive things returned as the main attraction. Silly lady, at that age, the BOX is the most fun part of Christmas.
