For the Greatest catagory I'd say:

    The Shawshank Redemption

    or

    Green Mile

I never saw Saving Private Ryan, But I want to as I heard that it is a GREAT movie.

For a favorite movie, to me, it means that the movie has to be worthwhile enough to buy and watch again and again.

    for me those would be:

Drop Dead Gorgeous [a much underated comedy. Maybe only funny if you live in the midwest USA. Plus, it's so 'Politically Incorrect' and pokes fun at everything taboo in today's society.]

Die Hard #1 [saw it was TV the other week and it's still good. Has some of the best lines and villians ever put on screen]

Road Warrior [one of the best chase scenes ever!]

Okay, me and my screwed up taste in movies:

    Jackass - The movie

    Amazon Women on the Moon

    This Is Spinal Tap

Taking Care of Business (actually, pretty much anything with Jim Belishi)

Fritz The Cat (the sequel "9 lives" wasn't all that good)

The first 2 Back To The Future movies

    The Breakfast Club

    Heavy Metal

    Godzilla (the old one LOL!)

Ever heard of Keaton, Chaplin, Lubitsch, Wilder, Huston, Losey, Pabst, Murnau, Lang, Dreyer, Bergman, Tarkovsky, Mikhalkov, Polanski, De Sica, Fellini, Pasolini, Clair, Renoir, Carné, Duvivier, Truffaut, Bunuel? Man there were movies before the 80's...

Avishai, I'm with you on this one. Metropolis was the coolest! It was supposed to be showing for 2 nights in Jan. at my local theatre, with a live piano player accompanying. It's been postponed until March, but you'd better believe I'll be there! Everybody should see Metropolis at least once on a big screen as Fritz Lang intended.

I was thinking the same thing after watching The Godfather for the first time a couple months ago. It was good but I wouldn't have called it outstanding.

OMG dr you are so disowned by me!!!!!!!! :-P godfather rocks, seriously. you know what DOESN'T live up to the hype? scarface. i mean, it was okay and it had some pretty cool parts, but it wasn't the best movie ever.

my favorites include : mulholland drive, the nightmare before christmas, may, suspiria, opera, ringu, donnie darko, blue velvet, lost in translation, james and the giant peach, edward scissorhands, the good girl, lovely and amazing, the godfather I & II, fight club, rushmore, bottle rockets, ET, say anything, evil dead, texas chainsaw massacre, halloween, empire records, the princess bride....i could obviously go on for days :-P

    Tink,

you have some eclectic tastes there in film. How could you say "Blue Velvet" is one of the greatest films ever made????? I'm worried about you.

it's amazing!! i loved it from the moment i saw that ear lying on the grass :-p no seriously, i know it's kind of a weird film, but it makes you feel something.a movie has to evoke a visceral reaction from me in order for me to deem it worthwhile.

"The Long Kiss Goodnight" Geena Davis was damn good. I also have lost count of how many times I have watched The Thonmas Crown affair - both the Original with Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway and the new one with Pierce Brosnan and Remi Rousseau and Faye Dunaway

    Ever heard of Keaton?

    Narkissos

    How could I forget?

IMHO Michael Keaton was the best of all of the Batmans, plus it had Jack Nicholson as the Joker.

Some of the best quotable one liners come from that movie

    Thx for bringing that up
