Should The Age Of Consent Be Lowered To 13?

I do not understand why NAMBLA is being brought into this discussion. No government in their right mind is ever going to adjust their age of sexual consent laws to allow adults to have sex with minor children. The very thought of it is preposterous, and disgusting. NAMBLA is an organization that should be dismantled, and their members arrested. It is especially vilified within the gay community, because of their desire to become a part of the gay community, they only serve to perpetuate the myth that homosexuals are pedophiles. They are banned from participation in virtually all gay-themed events, as they should be. Any organization that advocates sexual relations with prepubescent youth, male or female, should be wiped from the face of the earth.

Now, back to the question at hand..... I became sexually active at the age of 15. I dated someone who was the same age as I. Fortunately, both myself and my partner came from families who cared enough to talk to their children about sex, and responsibility. It seems to me that in today's society, there is too much irresponsibility when it comes to sex. Kids today learn about sex in the streets, rather than in the home.

If age of consent laws are going to be lowered, the law should also encompass the parents so that the responsibility of the consequences of any sex relations between two minors should fall upon the respective parents. By making the parents responsible for their children's actions, this will bring sexual matters back into the home. This way, parents will (hopefully) be more vigilant in educating their children about sexual responsibility, STDs, contraception, use of condoms, etc.

    Jim... great post.

I'm probably going to ruffle some feathers, but here goes: The idea that teenagers shouldn't have sex is responsible for a lot of teen pregnancies.

Because, the simple fact is... teenagers are horny. And many teenagers are not going to abstain merely because they don't have access to condoms or birth control.

If society is open enough about sex to provide contraception to teenagers, we're going to prevent a lot more pregnancies then if we put our heads in the sand and pretend that kids aren't going to have sex until they're 18.

And yes, I do think that 13 is very young to have sex. But does anyone think that a law is going to prevent that? Is anyone suggesting that 13-year-olds who have sex should be locked up? If not, then why all the fuss about the law?

    All the fuss!!!!!!!!!!??????????

Rationalizing bad behavior into acceptable actions in any way shape or form is irresponsible and suspect.

The fact of the matter is that children have no business having sex. Can I stop it??? Maybe not but I'll be goddamned if I'll just sit back complacently and accept it as the norm. The more we give in to the degredation of the world around us the sooner we as a race will cease to exist.

You don't understand what the law is for? It isn't to lock up 13 year olds that have sex. It to lock up the adults that seduce 13 year olds. As far as I'm concerned I would like the law to be 18. That way adults in the 30's who prey on dumb teenagers would be locked up. No law makes the kid liable for having sex.

So the fuss is about allowing 13 year olds to legally have sex with adults. Those in favor of allowing young teens to have sex are very suspect in my mind.

Okay, sorry for the agitative post. I think I've calmed down a little.

But Thunder Rider... I would still be interested if you could give me a good reason why it's wrong for, say, two 15-year-olds to have sex (assuming they use a condom).

Stacy... I'm not advocating letting 13-year-olds have sex with adults. If you see my post above, I advocated an age-difference rule. So, e.g, a 13-year-old could have sex with a 17-year-old, a 14-year-old with an 18-year-old, and so on.

I was addressing my comments to all the people here who were saying that teenagers should not have sex at all, even with other teenagers.

Stacy: Your the age of my daugter and have a good head on your shoulders. Your right there is a maturity difference and it would be nice if guys my husbands age weren't taking advantage of young girls. Allowing someone the space to growup without the bullshit is a good thing. I dated a guy that was 19 when I was 16 and I regret it to this day he had his own agenda and I was naive as young girls are. I can't imagine being 13 in that situation

Euph: Sex is about responsiblity if you think two 14 year olds are going to be responsible your mistaken. Have you raised 14 year olds ???? Condoms are not full proof and the risk of STD's are so high with carless sex. There are enough women unable to have kids later in life do to infections and such. This is the real world, my daughter and son in law used a condom and though it was correctly done. This was their first time he was 20 she was almost 19 and you now have our grandbaby due to this <yea> We have enough problems with the age at 16 Geesh

Euph I totally disagree with you. As someone who was a 14 year old girl not long ago let me say that 18 year old boys are adults and sexual predators. That's wrong. Many schools now have a special class for 8th grade girls to give them tools to deal with the sexual advances from Seniors in highschool. After all it's great sport to bag a virgin right?

I believe that if you are an adult and have sex with a minor then you need to go to jail. Don't confuse the issue with "what ifs", jail. Simple as that.

So Stacy... is 14 and 17 okay, then? How much age difference do you believe is acceptable?

Sheila... I respect your feelings about the matter as a mom. And I do think that it would be wiser for a 14-year-old to wait. But realistically, that doesn't always happen. I don't think that the kid needs to be stigmatized for that, or viewed as an example of the moral breakdown of society. And most especially, I think that the kid doesn't need to fear that they'll get in trouble if they try to obtain a condom.
