This sort of law is not progressive by any means- it's an artifact of the times when a woman wsa "old enough" for marriage when she was old enough to have children. It's not a question of sex at all, it's a question of legal responsibility. If you can't sign a contract because you're considered not legally responsible, why should you be able to take your knickers off?

I do not think it is a good idea to lower the age of consent. All previous postings have raised interesting points that had never occured to me, but are giving me pause to think.
I have a very bright attractive 12 year old girl who thinks she is 18. My wife and I are trying to keep her 12 years old and focused on the routine of a 12 year old. So far, we have been successful. But the child does not understand why she cannot date, go out alone with her friends, etc. She does not understand why we want to know who she is with at all times .Drugs or alcohol is not a problem (hopefully never) It has been my experience that this generation of children has matured faster than the generation I grew up in, and we as parents just have to make the best of it. If the age of consent were lowered ( God help us), it would make our lives difficult.
Or, perhaps we are just postponing the inevitable, they are going to grow up with or without our consent.

So a guy turns 18 and that night does his 13 year old girlfriend for his little birthday gift. At that point was consentual sex suddenly rape? Well I'm sure they have all the details worked out.
Stacy the same thing applies here in the US where the age of consent is 18, at least that is the age here in Texas. One minute before midnight the day before his birthday, the young man alluded to in the senario quoted above, would be legal, one minute after midnight he could be charged.
Then there was the case of the young woman who refused to testify against the adult who had sex with her and the Judge jailed her for contempt. In other words they put the victim in jail.
In spite of all of this, most girls under 18 is not ready for this kind of decision so, in my opinion, the law should not be changed. Bug

So what's the current law in England, then... is it illegal for a boy and a girl, both under 16, to have sex?
I would think that, to avoid the problem with the Spanish law, it might make sense to set an age differential. E.g. if either partner is under 18, the other partner cannot be more than 4 years older. So if a 13-year-old and a 17-year-old are going together, they can continue when she's 14 and he's 18, etc...

I think the ae differential thing is a very good idea. It serves to offer extra protection for the younger while not being a silly law for older people in a relationship.

Doesn't it give a false sense of security though? The age of consent has little to do with whether a person is going to have sex or not (in reality)

Franklin my parents gave me a lot of freedom from an early age. But I was always required to check in especially when plans were changed around so they'd know where I was, in case of emergency of course. Just always let her know that your priority in life is her safety, she'll get it.
So now at age 20 I still call them and let them know where I am. It's an old habit and it gives them a sense of security. I don't think it's much of them to ask. I am only home on weekends now but they get a call if I'm even going to be a few minutes late.

The laws need to be strict, and harsh for the perv who has sex with an underage girl/boy. It should give them pause, before they try and seduce the underage person. If they knew they'd do hard time-might save a few. U never know where these pervs are either. I was 12 and spent the night with a girlfriend. Two men in there 30's were visiting and tried to convince me to have sex. I refused, fearing the unknown and also, fearing my parents rage. A little fear is a good thing.

Are you talking about what age a girl can enjoy sex? Well speaking from personal experience I enjoyed it the first time at a young age. But then again it wasn't with a guy.
