False Memories

    hey jang,.

...they really do believe it all...

That is a generalization, and an unqualified statement. Not *all* abuse survivors, with/without repressed memories believe it *all*. Some are intelligent enough, and have the common sense to read and think their way through the mess of the mind. Some even find success and are able to sort through somewhat reasonably.

I went to your webpage and read the one part about False Memory Syndrome. I've read a couple of books about it in favor of it - "The Myth of Repressed Memory" by Dr. Elizabeth Loftus. I believe Dr. Loftus is also a board member of the False Memory Foundation, which would seem to be a conflict of interests as she also testifies against victims in court cases. This being said - I'm no specialist.

What does the Bible say about MPD? Nothing.

The Bible does speak of demons inhabiting people, but it does not support the notion that Christians can be demon possessed or controlled. It does say that all unbelievers are under Satan's rule (Ephesians 2:2-3). But, it also declares that God "hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son (Colossians 1:13).

The Bible says Christians can be tempted by Satan and his legions. But, inhabited? No! Controlled? No! God enables Christians to resist temptation and overcome sin. If Christians do follow after temptation, they are walking after the flesh and therefore do what will please the evil one. Nevertheless, the battle for the Christian is between the flesh and the spirit.

Instead of presenting multiple personality disorder, the Bible shows that unbelievers are sinners with a sinful nature and that believers may revert to the ways of the old nature's sinfulness. Instead of many personalities, the Christian has two natures. The old nature has judicially been put to death and buried, but the flesh can make it sinfully operative. The new nature is the new life in Christ which comes from true conversion by the Holy Spirit.- Another PsychoHeresy!* - your site

I do believe that blaming memories on therapists and bringing Satan, sin, hypnosis, the Church, the Bible, etc. in one mess is simplistic. The above person is equating mpd/did with demon possession, and saying that a Christian must fight the fine fight of faith. Reads more christian fundamentalist than the WTBTS - and that's not a compliment.

Here are some of the kinds of suggestions McHugh says are used by therapists to find alter personalities in their patients. Therapists ask such questions as "Have you ever felt like another part of you does things that you can't control?" Then, if the patient gives any kind of positive response, the next question might be, "Does this set of feelings have a name?" Even if the person does not yet give a name to that "set of feelings," the therapist may ask, "Can I talk to the part of you that is taking those long drives in the country?" Here the therapist separates the person into different personalities without even using hypnosis.5

McHugh contends, "Once patients have permitted a psychiatrist to 'talk to the part that is taking these long drives,' they are committed to the idea that they have MPD and must act in ways consistent with this self-image." He says, "The emergence of the first alter breaches the barrier of reality, and fantasy is allowed free rein."6 - Another PsychoHeresy!* - your site

For an example: A person comes to a therepist and says "I feel like killing my teenage daughter sometimes." The therepist says, "May I talk to the person who is a killer within you?" And when the killer is presented, the person thinks she/he is a killer and gives free reign to this fantasy, whether she/he exercises this killing or not. She/He has become a killer in their mind.

I believe this is a tremendous over-simplication. I'm not saying it's possible or impossible - but I sure don't believe it's near as simple as one suggestion or question. I would have a hard time believing that even a child would be that easily misguided. Can it happen? I suppose, but not that easily nor to "all" as you have stated.

    Just ain't so.

if this is a true thing, they are programmed to kill themselves, if they tell, so she was taking quite a risk in telling her story.

If this were true wouldn't she have killed herself by now?

Waiting, just as those who become JW's ALL believe it until something is presented that makes an impact, so the victims of false memories. The false memory movement is now reagarded as a psychotheraputic cult, and those who are true believers behave just like cult memebrs who cut off from their families and wont read anything that contradicts their beliefs.

Sure, there are some who, like those who study with the JW's, start to wonder if it is really truth and start investigating, but it seems these are very few and far between. Even then those who do make the break are generally badly affected for a very long time.

If you go to our Australian False Memory Assn website you will find some really good links to great resources and even stories from people who finally did see what was happening to them.

    Waiting,

It is a terrible thing for a child to be abused. It is also a terrible thing for parents to be accused years later of abuse that never happened because of false repressed memories. This whole issue has to be sorted out. To be damaged is awful. To be accused of damage that never happened is just as awful.

    i was wondering why
you would even bother with such research?
i mean are you that bored?
there are fanatics in every religon around the world and alot of them carry things to far.
but does that mean we have to dwell on it?
for the victims i am sorry but i don't think us harping on it will help them.
so instead of researching, get off your butt and try to help the ones you know.

    Randy,

There are many ways to help people. Some write books, which can help thousands, not just the ones they know. Jang has spent many years helping many people by working hard at getting useful information to those who needed it.

RandyAussie - you didn't read my story did you.

Our family are victims of this! Our daughter has not spoken to us for 6 years and we have not even met our grand daughter. Our son has gone along with his sister because she has convinced him that he just can't remember it all. Only the youngest son told them it was all crap .... but then he is a bit of an independent thinker like his mum

We were also separated from our sons children until he and his partner split and she didn't go along with this crap and so we finally got to meet another grand daughter at 5 years of age last year and reunited with our grandson after a 5 year separation!

In mid 1994 we were a very close family. We would find excuses to get together as often as possible for a BBQ and a laugh. On December 19th 1994 I was informed that my husband Simon and I were Satanic Ritual Abusers who had not only abused our children but our grandchildren as well in satanic rituals.

About 6 weeks later our grand daughter was killed, (eldest son's child from marriage). They wouddn't even look at us at the funeral. They accused us of cursing her and killing her on top of it!

So why is this important to me I wonder? Over1000 families in Australia alone that have experienced this and this is only the tip of the iceberg!

And believe me Randy, they need help and support just as much as we did when it happened to us. I ahve not met one family yet where the accused parents have not had a breakdown, whose health has not been adversly affected, just as much as xjws who have lost their whole family by not agreeing with the WTS.

you obviously missed my point. let me make it more simple for you.

Do any of you know of anyone who is or has been a Jw who has supposedly recovered memories of being sexually or ritually abused as a JW?

in regards to THIS question i was wondering why you would want people to tell you of their memories of their personal life specifically as a JW, as this is NOT the only religion in which things like this occur. every religion has its members who do willing cross the uncrossable line. JW's are NOT the only religion who are a M O B OF P E D O P H I L E S and ritualistic freaks.

If this isn't simple enough let me know and i'll explain it as if you are a 3 year old.

i understand that you have many emotional difficulties from past and present experiences and so do i. i can assure you that my family had many dark secrets and much pain and suffering which still has not ended. BUT i see no point in rehashing the events over and over again because by doing this we are keeping it fresh in our minds and not allowing ourselves to make a better life for ourselves.

i understand that you want to help people but "research for fundamentalism" isn't helping its interrogating. what is the point in dragging up unhappy painful memories.

I should qualify why I am asking this now: I am trying to do some research on how fundamentalism affects people in this area .....

your time would be better spent posting a note that says "anyone that would like help with their problems call me", rather than you researching lab rats.

RandyAussie, what makes you think that Jw's are the only ones I am asking?

This is a board for JW's and xJWs ... so I ask about JWs ....

On the Mormon board I have asked mormons

On the Christian boards I have asked Christians ....

I do not want to hear their stories ... I just want to get some idea of figures ...... Maybe you should also learn to read ...

And as for dredging up unhappy memories about this .... let me tell you frankly mate you have no idea what you are talking about .....

If you were the accused in these circumstances you wouldn't have to worry about having someone dredge up the memories .... they are there all the time --- and I have yet to talk to a family who doesn't feel the same.

As for helping, just what the hell do you think I do with my time?

Maybe if you did as I have already asked and come and see for yourself you may be just a little less judgemental and a little more human.
