There is far too much speculation and political opportunism at the moment.

There's far too much buck passing here too. Noone will hold their hands up for this.

    Absolutely terrible, what happened.

There must be a proper investigation.

Any person or organisation shown to be responsible should face criminal charges.

    SO WHO OWNS THE BUILDING.........

The local borough council own the building and pay the "not for profit" management company to run and operate it.

Like many "not for profit" companies, it doesn't mean they don't make money and pay people lots.

The council? Is this a government owned, not private owned building?

This should cause an immediate code to be enforced to install fire sprinklers, at the very least.

As a private rental home owner, we install fire suppression systems in each house as it is vacated. It is centered in the kitchen. These are single family homes. I can't fathom no sprinkler system in a huge apartment building such as this!

I have not been able to watch the news reports about it. My heart aches for these people too much at the moment to even hear about it.

The fire started on the 4th floor in a kitchen by a faulty refrigerator, which spread outside by an open window and then up and onto the exterior cladding, which was unfortunately constructed with a flammable polyethylene inner layer.

That's how it spread so quickly and eventually enveloped the entire building.

it might not be criminal, but economics. The cladding had an airspace and toxic plastic to burn, but that airspace is code to prevent mold. but also creating this chimney effect. depleting oxygen in the building, toxic, nasty killing fumes.

Is it better to pave over England to give all the comers a separate ground level unit? where is Prince Phillip when we need him with a bon mot?

interesting. hopefully with the source and spread of the fire at the perimeter, many eventually kept their windows closed and escaped to the cool inner core, down the staircase. hopefully none clung to the windows where the heat was, and were somehow warned to seek the central way down.

The reports on the news are now saying that officials "hope the death toll does not rise over 100". I think this will be too big for anyone to cover up so hopefully the truth will come out after the enquiry.

On another note the politicians are attacking each other over how their opposite numbers have dealt with this tragedy. It's no wonder that people are so disillusioned with those cretins in politics.
