Now that we have stepped away from the JW faith, how do you feel about the bible itself?

What about those awkward sections of scripture? How did you rationalise or justify those sections?

What is the most troubling section of scripture you have come across?

"Troubling" in the sense that I never bought the WTS explanation?

John 20:28 - the one where Thomas says "My Lord and my God" to the resurrected Jesus.

The WTS attempts to explain it away always seemed extraordinarily weak and convoluted.

No one debates "trinity" anymore, but back in the day, I used to dread the thought of someone bringing up that scripture. Now, of course, I simply don't care anymore.

Great topic. Look forward to reading some of these. Here is mine.

    2 Kings 2:23-24

    Elisha Mocked

23And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.24And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

Genesis 19:8 " I have two daughters, do to them as you wish; only do nothing to these men. That's a hard passage for not only JW's to rationalize but any believer.

that bloke that made a weird deal with god about sacrificing the first thing that comes out of his house.

    Judges 11:30-40

I know the Jobos said he didn't really kill his daughter.....but those blokes at that time were mental enough to actually do barbaric stuff.....if they even existed.

Never mind, old imaginary mental case in the sky can bring her back.

The one where a Levite man had a concubine, they traveled to a town where the men wanted to have sex with him. To get them to quiet down the man they were staying with threw out his concubine to the crowd. In the morning she was found dead. The levite man proceeds to cut her up and pass out her body parts to the tribes of Israel. This triggered the isrealites to start a war against the tribe of Benjamin since the men who raped her were from that tribe.

    This is from Judges 19.

I read this when I was like 12 years old and it gave me nightmares. I was sick to my stomach for days.

The story where Lots daughters have sex with their father also disturbed me deeply when I read it I think I was 11 or 12.

More recently, I was studying with my son and came across the scripture where Abraham tries to kill Isaac and THAT's when I decided I wasn't going to study with him like this. The story has a different meaning when you have your own kids. I mean, even before kids it is very disturbing but now it's like...

    God "hardening" Pharoah's heart.

Calling bears to devour mouthy kids.

Stoning your own kids to death for sassing you.

Buying and selling human beings as property.

    The list goes on...

Suffice it to say, there's enough fucked-up shit in the Bible to make Dario Argento double-take.

What everyone else has posted, especially @Whynot said. Those stories made me sick to my stomach as a 12/13 year old. (even now its disturbing)

Also having to marry your rapist. (if he chooses).

God authorizing genocide yet asking young women to be spared. Obviously a human thought.

The Bible should be X-Rated, only for adults.
