I resumed my smoking habit about a year before I left the borg. I've been on and off of cigarettes since that time. I'm trying to quit (again). I haven't had a cigarette yet today, but the cravings are getting pretty intense. It is all I can do right now to keep from hopping in my car and taking a trip to the gas station.

Just looking for some encouragement to keep up the fight. I know from previous experience that if I can make it through a couple of days without lighting up, then I'm OK after that. But right now it's a bitch! I'm clenching my teeth from the cravings.

I havent had one in 6 days. Im on patches. They seem to do the job and reduce the stress. The main problem Ive got is the impulse to have something in my mouth.

    So youre not alone bro.

    Thanks RF.

BTW, I enjoyed your "Soviet Communism" thread, even though I haven't posted on it.

Well, speaking of experience, stoping with smoking is bitch. But it can be done, as you know already. Drink plenty of water [don't know why that should help, but it's always good for you] and make sure you have diversion.

I'm totally addicted myself, but I wish you luck in quitting. Take care, and go for it! You too RF.

I quit last January right here on this board. I used Zyban which made it 10 times easier. It still takes a lot of will power though.

One thing that helped me: positive thinking. When you feel the craving, think "I DO NOT SMOKE" "I AM A NON SMOKER" "I HAVE GIVEN UP SMOKING". Your brain actually listens and stops pestering you after a few minutes.

Copenhagen? Oh, great. Lovely. No teeth. Oral Cancer. I'd rather have lung cancer. At least you can't see it when you open your mouth.

If you can go a couple of days and you're off, go for it man. The time I quit, I kept thinking "I don't smoke." And it worked. The patch helped. But then you've got to get off the patch. Best to go cold turkey if you can. You've got my respect and admiration if you can quit. Go for it and it will really be a Thanksgiving Day for you.

Francois and others, the Zyban isn't like a patch, It's based on an anti depressant that targets the addiction centres in your brain. You actually take it leading up to giving up and unlike nicotine replacement, is non addictive in itself.

    Try Zyban Baby!!!

There are side effects, but they are much easier to live with then withdrawal symptoms.

I only used them for one week, but that was enough for me, I decided to go off them and try it alone...I managed okay...been smoke free for almost 2 years.

Andy was a smoker for 30 years, he started smoking when he was 11. He swore he'd never give up...even though his mother died of lung cancer (smoking related). When Zyban came out, he gave it a try...he stayed on it for 3 months...and he's been smoke free for almost 2 years also.

Good luck Dan...don't give up...hang in there.

ps...I still get the cravings...especially when we socialise...boy do I get the cravings...but then I remind myself how hard it was to give up, and how expensive it was (1 pack 25's a day here)...I also remind myself how I used to feel after a cigarette...lethargic and dopey...okay I'm still dopey LOL.
