It is pretty obvious he wanted them to scatter and populate the earth.

We must not be reading the same passage...to me it's pretty obvious that he didn't want them to achieve what they'd be able to with a common tounge.

Nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them -> let's confuse their language.

The scattering that this (alledgedly) caused was incedental.

But whatever. It really doesn't matter, because either way the account is demonstrably false on many levels

What he didnt want them to accomplish was stay there and grow.

He wanted them to grow throughout the earth

And in my opinion to show that man can not manage man or the earth.

We have the capacity for free will but without following God we are a failure.

I believe that is the point God is making in the bible.

Also he has given us the free will to come to that conclusion or not.

Only you know what you have put in to it.

If it is all your will, I don't think you will ever reach that conclusion.

That is why those who come to Jesus/God have to come on bended knee.

That is what the whole issue is about sovernty.

    Your will or Gods will.

But they most certainly would have spread though the entire earth without him screwing with their languages. If that's not the case, how do you explain spanish-speaking people in the americas? How do you explain english-speaking people in the US and canada (and all over the world, for that matter)? People are going to spread out and explore regardless. Did god really need to act to cause people to spread out, or was he just impatient and didn't want to wait another couple centuries? Why was it so urgent that he cause people to spread out right then?

Joe, I do realize it could be a myth,

I am hoping it is not, because my interpretation will have a happy ending,

so I am plaing devils advocate, pun intended.

God probably has a timetable and a way he wants things done.

We can always arm chair quarter back and say how we would do things.

People who like to do that become mormons, latter day saints.

There reward in the next life is to be God of their own world.

Many times throughout my life I have said if I was God

I would not do thngs the way he did them.

But that is not the way it works.

So I try to understand and make sense of the way God does things.

A lot of times it is his way or the highway.

The book of job and ecclesiates give me that message.

I think this is a large part of the problem...when faced with the inadequecies of a religious text, those that hold that text as holy always try to "make sense" of it - i.e. rationalize/justify it. The god of the hebrew scriptures was an unmitigated asshole, but the capability of humans to rationalize away the flaws in themselves, their beliefs, and those that they love knows no bounds.

That is your perogative to come to that conclusion.

I hope it serves you well.

I hypothosize God caused the flood and the language disruption at babel.

Becaue he wanted to keep man in his image.

and he wanted them to fill the earth to prove a point to man, not to God.

He did not want them making minotaurs, satyrs, centaurs.

Plus he did not want them to conquer the atom until the earth was populated.

What does that mean? Wait until there's more people to annihilate with a bomb? Until then, remain a prescientific, ignorant race.

James Brown, are you seriously telling me that you believe that?

Language has evolved as Homo sapiens has spread across the globe not the other way round. You really should stop gaining your world view from a book of ancient myths.

This is taken from and old sumerian story as mentioned but since it's origins are from there the question becomes was their a historical leader to this?

Gilgemesh (The real one not the exagerated fiction) or Hammarabi have been suggested. I personally think we are looking at another Gilgemesh spin off. The flood story and Adam and Eve came from Gilgemesh legends.

The atom is used for other things besides bombs.
