I don't think it is irrelevant that the Karaites continued using God's name long after the Rabbanites had condemned it's usage. We know they were still using it in the 10th century because of the writings of Qirqisani so it is possible this is the source of Raymundus Martini's latinised version of God's name.

No legitimate group or organization has any reason to lie or use half-truths, or misquotes. The use of a "false stylus" is never justified. The moral issues involved take precedent over the pronounciation of YHWH. Evidently YHWH did not see fit to preserve the punctuation, but any lies and deceptions based around that name belie the claims of those claiming to worship YHWH. Yehowah, Jehovah, Yahweh, is far more concerned with the deceptive practices of so-called religious leaders, than with the pronunciation of YHWH. IMHO, you should concern yourself with the fruitage of the particular "leaders" that you are associated with, rather than worrying about the pronounciation of YHWH.

Your friend obviously hasn't read the appendix in the NWT where they admit openly that Jehovah is not the correct pronunciation, but is the acceptable pronunciation in English.
"Why, then, does this translation use the form "Jehovah"? Because that form of the divine name has a long history in the English language."
The same as why it's Jesus instead of Yeshua.
Although, this has long baffled me. Why make such a big deal about restoring and using God's name when they don't go to the most accurate and accepted pronunciation instead of watering it down with English? Make absolutely zero sense. There are plenty of Bible translations that use Yahweh or YHWH instead of Jehovah.
