  I think a graceful exit can be achieved (except the shunning, not much you can do about that) by confidently and quietly turning down any elder "assistance", assuring them that you are fine, and you will be in touch if you ever need them.

  I get perverse pleasure from watching elders trip overthemselves like the keystone cops.

  The more time they waste on you, I figure, is more time away from bothering the rest of the congregation. And perhaps it will be enough for them to reconsider their own involvement. I want it harder and harder for the WTS to find those willing to "lead".

  Jgnat...maybe this is crazy but the elders to me are the Clint Eastwoods, and Charles Bronzon film charactors, they project a image of masculinity that is cold and calculated ...give me the " keystone cops" as an organisation and BUSTER keaton or Chaplin as Elders...they had humun qualities...

  Yep, had the same thing happen to me a few times. It finally stopped...well maybe it has stopped.

  On a Tuesday night just after the meeting would have been over, my phone rang and the number displayed was the number to the KHall 75 miles away that I used to attend. The brother, whom I know very well, introduced himself and said that he was calling about "a report" that I had gotten remarried and wanted to know if it was true. I could tell by the sound that another person was listening on another line. I asked him who made such a report to him. He said one of my family members. I asked which family member so that I might set them straight. He said he would not say. To that I said, no, I am quite single, not remarried. "So you are not married?" he asks again. I said no. He said goodbye. Crazy phone call.

  So about a year later I got another phone call on another Tuesday night just after the meeting would have been over. But this time the number was blocked. A muffled/disguised voice that I recognized said, "Hello, Can I speak to you wife." To which I said, who do you think my wife to be? Reply...uh, oh, I just need to speak to her. To which I said, you have the wrong number. Click.

  I too agree that there is a graceful way to leave that religion. With honesty, dignity and courage. At the end of the all you really have is yourself and what that's worth. Don't trade that by being fearful afraid and weak and skulking arond like a worm. If you can not be true to your own self then what are you? Sell yourself out and you will have nothing and be nothing. Well said New Hope and Happiness.

  the exact thing happened to me all those years ago, I'd gone really past caring and answered their stupid loaded questons and DA'ed my self!

  At least Clint Eastwood has soul. Those cold and calculating men, tall, distinguished, with faces of granite, are scared underneath. I watch a scared dog a lot more cautiously than a large, confident one. No knowing when a scared dog will bite.

  ( sorry JGNAT) ...but that is how i see it...why must we not be wo/men enough to compete in this world?
