Cofty, I respectfully disagree. There are many wonderful people in the Church who help the poor, the widows, the orphans and the destitude. One out of twelve is more than enough to bring ruin to anys' reputation.

    respectfully,

There are also many wonderful people in the Watchtower, in Scientology, in the Church of LDS, in Islam. They are all despicable organisations.

Cofty, by your yardstick, humanity is despicable. I don't blame any particular institution for corruption. It is what they do when it is found out that counts.

People congregate, form groups, draft constitutions, and put out their shingle. In my mind the difference between a healthy group and an unhealthy one is the state of their borders. Are people free to come and go?

That's a good definition, jgnat. I like it.

Did you invent it, in which case, deep respect! Or is it a quote from elsewhere?

Cofty, I know of no orphanages, food pantries, hospitals or any other volunteer institutions that help the poor that are organized by the WTS, Scientologists , Muslims or Mormons. Perhaps you do.

I know of many sponsored and supported by the [Catholic] Church and it's members. Ordaned and lay people.

    Respectfully,

Muslims and LDS do a great deal of charitable work.

jgnat - That is a very strange extrapolation of what I said. How on earth did you make that leap?

The RCC claims to speak for god. For centuries it has enjoyed unquestioned obedience from its followers. It is those grandious claims of divine authority that have made widespread child rape possible.

What have the RCC done when abuse was reported? They have shut up the victims, hidden the rapist priests and covered it over.

    Despicable to the core?

Yes, the RCC has a lot to answer for; years of covering up abuse and protecting the abusers. It's a big, old organization with not a small tetch of arrogance.

All of Islam? Not all Islamic sects are fundamentalist or punish members.

jgnat - I said it was "rotten to the core". I believe it is. The problem is not just with individuals it is with the structure of authority that makes abuse and the cover up up of abuse possible.

The responsibility for the scandal goes to the very top.

Core teachings of the RCC are oppressive.

All of Islam? Not all Islamic sects are fundamentalist or punish members.

Yes all of Islam is united in its oppression of women and homosexuals.
