I mixed up a batch of this and tried it on some work clothes, and it worked excellently. It's really cheap to make, too. I used an ivory bar, instead of what they listed up there.

I should be sleeping by now ... but so glad I found this recipe

again, as I meant to try it! Thanks for bumping it Satanus!

I think a smaller batch would be better for me, so I'll just cut

the ingredients in half ... should work!

If bleach is added to the load are their problems with that?

Sometimes bleach causes a reaction.... & the water turns brown.

    Borax works as a bleach.

I wasn't thinking about the borax ... of course! .. but

what about the 'disinfection' aspect .... I like to do all the white

towels ect with a bit of bleach!

Bleach is compatable when you add it in the machine. I don't know what it would do if you added it to the soap mix.

I got about half a gallon w 1 cup soda, 1/2 cup borax and one bar soap. It was basically at the saturation level, borax to water. It is totally dissolved and is a slush, since it cooled off. It works great.

    Does it work well?

Someone gave me a box of Amway powder detergent. It lasted forever and it got even the toughest stains out of my white work shirts without pre-treatment. It's the most effective detergent I've ever used. Problem is that it's expensive.

A lot of soaps have filler added. This diy stuff has none. W the good stuff being so expensive, yet so simple to make, it makes me wonder if it is a high profit product, a scam, perhaps.

I've heard that washing soda can irritate the skin. Wear latex gloves when mixing in the washing soda.

It dissolves instantly, and you don't need to put your hands in it. Just use a spoon or stick to stir it.
