I reeceived an email today that said:

We visited my parents in FL last weekend, and though they're still
technically Witnesses, they consider themselves double agents.
They mentioned something to me that I hadn't heard before & I'm sorry, but I don't have source information, but I could call them for it if needed. They said Bethel's letting go 60% of the ones who work on the printing, and that the WT & Awake are going to be turned over to commercial printers. I thought that sounded pretty major, shakeup wise. I hope the "lifers" will be okay, I may not be a Witness anymore, but I do care about the friends still. Anyway,
I thought I'd mention it, in case you hadn't heard about that.

    This is surprising news, Randy.

If it is true, why are they doing it? Does it mean that commercial publishing companies can print and distribute the magazines cheaper than they can do it themselves? Or are they going to set up private printing operations operated by brothers, to divest themselves of assets that may be seized by the tax man.

I hope you or others can verify this.

As for the lifers, in Bethel, it is time they get out an smell the flowers and be put out to pasture. If Dunlap could do it, and Willie the Whale, they should be able to do it too.

I don't know why they would do that..they have free labor, don't provide insurance or retirement plans, no disabliity insurance to worry about, no union, no benefits of any kind to shell out except all that fine spiritual food...I think it will be a long time before that ever happened, if at all...and if it does, we need to weasel our way into those independent printing companies and start a bit of reprint...

    Sincerely,

    Randy,

If that's true I'm not surprised. You are more aware than most that the society is very inefficient even with slave laborers. They finally figured out it would be cheaper to turn it over to professionals.

Esay to understand, they know free qualify labor is hard to get thanks to the internet. I think that mentally disturbed are the one who joint them.

Well, I'll consider any news with an open mind! I hope this story is validated, as it would demonstrate a huge step in downsizing of the B-Org.

However, this sounds a little unlikely. Like it or not, the free-labour powered WT printing house is low cost. Furthermore, they already have the printing presses in house, perhaps with bank loans, or perhaps paid for free-and-clear).

    Why get rid of them?

Outsourcing makes sense to large corporations when internal costs for certain (non-core) operations are far in excess of the costs incurred by specialists in that type of operation. Only then does it make sense to give the job to a third party. But printing is a core operation for the WT, and they do it far cheaper than any commercial house. I just can't see this making good business sense. And we are talking about a business, after all.

Thought: from the spy books I've read, sometimes you find a mole by feeding different pieces of misinformation through different channels. Maybe this story is part of a large "Apostate (mole) hunt"?

WT & Awake are going to be turned over to commercial printers.

If true, commercial printers operated by elite Jehovah’s Witnesses, most likely.

The rumour of this state of affairs may support the theory (yeah, I know it’s a stretch) that printing religious tracts and selling them to your adherents, is no longer where the money is and it’s time to take corporate profits and turn to other ventures less risky in the hopes of holding and building onto what they’ve (WTBTS Corporation) got.

My guess is more of a leaning towards more real estate development, JW education-like services, convention revenues, hotels, donation investment into stocks and bonds or all of the above.

God I bet a lot of Jehovah's Witnesses wished the WTBTS would go 'public'. Of course, I wouldn't buy their stock...I try to practice ethical investing.

When my hubby was doing temporary work there, in the early 90's, it was being said there at that time, that they knew they could send the mags out to be printed far cheaper than what it cost to feed and house the Bethel workers. So, it sounds like it might be true.
