    Most interesting, Ann O'Maly. I would say this is definitely a sign of independent thinking. The WTS is so hung up on accuracy. The very heavens themselves in the movement of the planets are evidence of Jehovah's accuracy. (Psalm 19)

    I did a quick word-search of the Old Testament and found eleven verses detailing to the year and month of a King's reign. Just so we would have an accurate knowledge of these events.

    The verses that mention month and year:

    (1Ki 6:1) And it came to pass in the four hundred and eightieth year after the children of Israel were come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month Zif, which is the second month, that he began to build the house of the LORD.

    (2Ki 25:1) And it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he, and all his host, against Jerusalem, and pitched against it; and they built forts against it round about.

    (2Ki 25:27) And it came to pass in the seven and thirtieth year of the captivity of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the twelfth month, on the seven and twentieth day of the month, that Evilmerodach king of Babylon in the year that he began to reign did lift up the head of Jehoiachin king of Judah out of prison;

    (2Ch 3:2) And he began to build in the second day of the second month, in the fourth year of his reign.

    (2Ch 15:10) So they gathered themselves together at Jerusalem in the third month, in the fifteenth year of the reign of Asa.

    (2Ch 29:3) He in the first year of his reign, in the first month, opened the doors of the house of the LORD, and repaired them.

    (Ezr 6:15) And this house was finished on the third day of the month Adar, which was in the sixth year of the reign of Darius the king.

    (Est 2:16) So Esther was taken unto king Ahasuerus into his house royal in the tenth month, which is the month Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.

    (Jer 28:1) And it came to pass the same year, in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fourth year, and in the fifth month, that Hananiah the son of Azur the prophet, which was of Gibeon, spake unto me in the house of the LORD, in the presence of the priests and of all the people, saying,

    (Jer 52:4) And it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came, he and all his army, against Jerusalem, and pitched against it, and built forts against it round about.

    Methinks Ethos sat down with a scratch-pad and found out to his horror that his hermaneutical calculations did not help his cause.

    It should be quite obvious by now that the doctrine of 1914 in its entirety was created upon false and misleading information,

    more than likely to further produce validation from the organization's previous assertion predating that year, as they say the goal posts got moved

    a little. The actual multiplying of 7 x doctrine which was further used to reach at 1914 was another part of this unscriptural calculation

    but certainly had its commercial valuable appeal toward the WTS. published works.

    If the WTS. is still around in 30, 40 years one can confidently expect 1914 to finally washed off the books for good and may be

    part of the reason the WTS. is going through a kind of internal reformation that can be seen in its operations today.

    We were talking about how long the temple remained desolated, remember? Don't conflate the period of the temple's ruin with the period of Babylonian domination. The two periods are not the same.

    I made no such 'mistake'. I quite deliberately explained how the context of Jeremiah 29 confirms that the seventy years at Jeremiah 25 could not refer to 70 years of exile. It's not my fault that Ethos couldn't figure out how the accounts relate.

    You've been told before that this shouldn't be a direct quote, that the Chronicle doesn't 'read' that way. But yes, it does pinpoint the date on which the Persians took Babylon.

    "Without inhabitant" is prophetic hyperbole. There were inhabitants after the seventh month as Ezek. 33:21-27 bears out, Jer. 52:30 hints at and archaeological findings confirm.

    Your date of Tishri 1, 537 BC is based on pure conjecture. You recognize that. We've been through this already in the earlier discussion with you and in this thread with Ethos. AlanF's research was presented, which included references to (1) the Bible and (2) Josephus, and showed 538 BC is on firmer ground than 537.

    I get a headache. And as much I trust the fall of jerusalem happened in 587 BCE, I still considered the posts defending this date superfluous. The Bible is vague, contradictory and has large gaps. It can not provide by itself a reliable account of the chronology of the sixth century BCE. If I have to split my 10 point vote, I give 8 points to defenders of 587 BCE and 2 points to defenders of 607. The only time Ethos seem to have made sense is when he said --I paraphrase-- with the Bible you have to conjecture. Exactly.

    Let the Babylonian clay tablets solve the problems. They are 99.999999 percent reliable in determining all important dates of the neo-Babylonian period. Sorry Bible lovers, but the "god" of the Babylonians was a better communicator and a better record keeper than the God of the Hebrews. When it comes to history and chronology, I trust the Babylonian text much more than the Bible's.

    An inscription on the Nabonidus Chronicle reads: "Babylon fell VII/16/17," which indicates that Babylon's fall occurred on or about Tishri 16, 3223 AM, October 11, 539 BC, Julian, October 5, 539 BC, Gregorian. Ezra 1:1-3 indicates that it was "in the first year of Cyrus the king of Persia" -- Cyrus' first regnal year ran from Nisan 538 BC to Nisan 537 BC -- that Cyrus caused a decree to go out to the Jews to "rebuild the house of Jehovah the God of Israel," which means that what the Nabonidus Chronicle tells us is that Cyrus' accession year occurred in 539 BC.

    Since Ezra 3:1 indicates that it was "after seventy years" in the "seventh month" of Tishri 537 BC -- the same month in which the land of Judah suffered desolation "without inhabitant" living in any of the cities of Judah as had been foretold by the prophet Jeremiah -- that the repatriated Jews had returned to their cities (Jeremiah 25:11, 12; 29:10; 33:10), and Ezra 3:6 states that "from the first day of the seventh month," that is to say, on or about Tishri 1, 3225 AM, September 4, 537 BC, Julian, August 29, 537 BC, Gregorian, the repatriated Jews began to offer sacrifices at God's altar in Jerusalem. This means that this 70-year period would have come to an end on Tishri 1, 537 BC, following the commencement of Cyrus' first regnal year.

    x = 537 BC

    x = x (+ -70)

    x = 607 BC

    Thus, by subtracting 70 years from 537 BC, we can deduce based on (1) the Bible, (2) Josephus and (3) the Nabonidus Chronicle that the land of Judah had been made to lie desolate by Babylon on or about Tishri 1, 3155 AM, September 27, 607 BC, Julian, September 20, 607 BC, Gregorian, which is when this 70-year period would have commenced.

    The temple utensils were returned to the Jews to take with them to Judah toward the end of the fulfillment of Jeremiah's prophecy when Cyrus gave the order during his first regnal year, and how long after the order was it acted upon? What month? I think that's just an argument with no real answer. Within four months' time, the Jews that didn't leave Babylon stayed, but those that left Babylon left with the temple utensils and they arrived there by 537 AD [you meant BC, of course!]. This is conjecture based on a drop dead date taken from the Nabonidus Chronicle of Tishri, the seventh Hebrew month, the 14th [you meant the 16th] day, in the 17th year of Nabonidus' reign.

    Your date of Tishri 1, 537 BC is based on pure conjecture. You recognize that. We've been through this already in the earlier discussion with you and in this thread with Ethos. AlanF's research was presented, which included references to (1) the Bible and (2) Josephus, and showed 538 BC is on firmer ground than 537.

In fact, every date we might fix to any Bible-related event is conjectured based on the drop dead date of Tishri 16, 3223 AM, October 11, 539 BC, Julian, October 5, 539 BC, Gregorian. I don’t have a problem with this since salvation isn’t based on getting any of these dates correct. For you this is fun; but for those of us for whom Bible prophecy strengthens our faith, this is all just water-cooler talk pretty much, @AnnOMaly. Other elders tend to think of this stuff as absolute, but I understand, just as you do, that this is all "pure conjecture."

    Hilarious. It hardly matters whether you and AnnOMaly 'agree' that I made a 'mistake'. (Though I am fairly sure that AnnOMaly actually understands why I referred to Jeremiah 29 with regard to the context of the 70 years as it relates to Jeremiah 25.) It is an extremely tedious contention to maintain that I supposedly "did make such a mistake" after I clearly indicated why I explained the relationship between the two passages.

    Calendar conversion tools can be at odds with the historical Babylonian or Hebrew calendars. It's to do with the placing of intercalary months.

    It's not "all 'pure conjecture.'" To be clear: The year 537 BCE for Cyrus' decree and the exiles' return is "pure conjecture."
