I feel a sadness so deep that friends wonder why
my art and my blinds stay undrawn.

Gone is the muse who promised me solace while
guys played ball and little girls dreamt of jocks.

A blank canvas before me says it is life, a lost
chance to paint the town red or a scene that

Rivals Nature herself ... is it too late for me
to become what I might have become?

The road has long been my home,

Yet I no more travel west nor east,

For staying put is all I now do.

Passersby bustle by and pay me

No heed, given my nature and

    The years that have passed.

I merely observe what I, too,

    Once did: rushing while coming

And going is what the living still

Do: that's all long gone for one

Such as I, who, for centuries,

    Have watched new generations

Take the road where I was killed -

This phantom of the roadside has

No where else to go . . .

That last poem reminds me of the song "old man river".

    Thanks, Nancy, for your post.

I'll have to review those lyrics to see what you mean.

    Gratefully,
