there HAS to be some connection between leaving the organization and finding GREAT music!! My j-dub friends and I never sat around listening to the kind of music listed above, that is for sure............I can remember my musical awareness rise when I realized that one of the "old Kingdom Melodies" was lifted (note-for-note) from a slow passage of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Anyway, here is my fab-10: MADMAN ACROSS THE WATER - Elton John FOR YOU AND ME - Popol Vuh LAID - James COLD SPRING HARBOR - Billy Joel (UNTITLED ALBUM -w- "LIPS LIKE SUGAR") - Echo and the Bunnymen ODELAY - Beck SONGS FROM THE RAIN - Hothouse Flowers VIVALDI'S FOUR SEASONS - Itzak Perlman -w- the Isreal Philharmonic BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER - Simon and Garfunkel DRIFT - The Devlins

As usual, my favorites are artists nobody's ever heard of. Except for the first one:

    1. Jonny Lang: Lie to Me
    2. Toto La Momposina - I'll count both her albums as one
    3. Los Orishas: A Lo Cubano (new discovery, thanks to my bf): all the elegance of Cuban music combined with the power and drive of rap; this is a collection of love songs and upbeat subjects, near as I can make out (my Spanish is very bad, bf isn't here to translate, and there is NO lyric sheet)
    4. Pachamama: South American Evergreens (formerly available thru mp3.com, which has since shut down): my favorite on this album is a Spanish/Quechua patter song called "Cuatro Coraceros."
    5. Klezmatics: counting all their albums as one 'cause I can't make up my mind.
    6. Squirrel Nut Zippers: Perennial Favorites
    7. Piazzola in Oldenburg: another gem from the now-defunct mp3.com. Features Lothar Hensel on bandoleon (a sort of tiny button accordion). Electrifying Argentine tango music - written for bandoleon (I think) and strings.
    8. Ry Cooder: Chicken Skin Music
    9. Clifton Chenier: once again, going to count all his albums as one. I only have Live at St. Mark's, and it's about time to buy another.
    10. Mojo Nixon: Horny Holidays. I prefer *twisted* holiday music, thanx.
