We are right off I-64 on the Illinois/Indiana border. You said you want to avoid interstate highways, but I-64 between Louisville, KY and St. Louis MO is mostly rural and rather a nice drive. I don't know what it's like east of Louisville, and it ends in St. Louis. US Route 50 heading west from St Louis is also really scenic, but very hilly and curvy.
