Longhairgal, I think the comment "half of us are here to test the other half" wasn't meant to be an excuse for anyone to be assholes, it was a warning to the nice innocent naive newbies that they were going to be disillusioned by the actions of others frequently. I think it was meant to be an encouragement to keep the faith because otherwise, they would all go mental like the guys who were carried bodily out of the dining room never to be seen again.. . . .just my .02.Because the people who test us are not usually trying to(test us, specifically), they are just naturally obnoxoius people. OTOH, who knows what kind of mind games were going on in that nuthouse?

I was only a temp at Wallkill, but this one is a favorite story from my brother. It gives a little clue as to the mental state of some of the older bethelites (late 70's)...

He rode to the meetings with long-timers Howard and Beana Z****. When this couple needed to miss a meeting, Beana would type up a letter to my brother with the date, address, greeting and body and then husband and wife would both sign it and put it in a sealed envelope addressed to my brother. Beana would knock on my brother's door and give it to him and have him read it before she left him.

Bethel brothers are very much idealized, I met a few nice ones. The creep brother that I mentioned in another thread used to volunteer at Bethel. He had a few very strange episodes that I wont go into in this thread, but I will only say that the word “weirdo” doesn’t do him justice.

I volunteered at Bethel once and felt used, maybe it was just the brothers I was dealing with. I had a nagging feeling of “what is going on here?”

This religion was and is full of delusional people who use emotional or spiritual blackmail to get other people to do what they want. I saw this from time to time with "difficult" personalities in the hall. The only people who I would ever humor would be the very elderly or somebody suffering from a serious illness. Any other wannabe could take their attitude and shove it.

Very excellent and critical analysis of the Watchtower religion. I could not agree more. If the Watchtower claims to be who its is, please be honest and say so instead of claiming what its not. :D

Dagney Your post about sister not wearing slacks or jeans but a skirt to work in really hit home for me.

My husband and I went to Bethel in1991, I did not know what to pack so I asked the CO's wife. She told me to not bring any jeans and only one pare of slacks as sister only wore dress or skirts. I was assigned construction after we got there they did not tell me before so on the first day on the job I show up in a skirt. My overseer was beyond livid at me asking me why I was in a skirt. I told him what the CO's wife had told me to bring and that I had no jeans with me. My overseer said and to quote him "No CO's wife could be that stupid to tell you such a thing."

We were not told what I would be doing at Bethel and I had assumed I would be in some sort of cleaning not construction. Thank goodness they had the hoppers at Bethel, I had to go back to my room and grab a pair of jeans that did not fit right to work that day.

My overseer never forgave me for not bring the proper clothes with me, he always told me I was way too lazy and did not really want to serve Jehovah. It hurt so badly as I tried my best, the work was really heavy for me as I was supposed to lift a lot. I finally weighed some of what I was lifting and it was over 90 pounds that I was lifting over my head.

I just could never no matter how hard I tried please my overseer. He hated me.

I wanted to confirm whether this rumor had any legs...

I heard a few years back that several Bethelites were having Halo parties and that a good amount of them were sent home for playing this video game?

@Emery: Yes, I can confirm that was true. When I was in Wallkill late 2000s the guys were talking about this. At morning worship it was brought up that bethelites were playing a game focused on killing, etc. and that if you were found to have a copy of Halo in your room, you would be asked to leave bethel. supposedly some guys were caught and kicked out, others had to discreetly throw out their copies. now, super smash bros. brawl is all the rage, some nights its wallkill vs. patterson, or brooklyn vs. wallkill, etc.

i personally didn't really have disturbing experiences in wallkill. i disliked how cold and serious the atmosphere was though. mind you, while i was there, some guys supposedtly got into a fist fight in shipping and they simply moved the guys to different departments. myself and others thought this was wrong, they should have been asked to leave, so we joked we could simply fight eachother to get moved to a better department.

actually, i got a funny one. there was a unsecured wireless router in e res, and someone was using it to look at gay pornography. the computer department found out about this (they check what sites you view every once in awhile) and had to do a manhunt to find out who it was, think it was some temp who of course was kicked out for it. we had a laugh at it though.

Haha thanks for confirming that jnrtigbfxd0. I remember I was told by a friend that he didnt approve of me playing Halo 3, yet this guy played Gears of War all the time! GOW was the most gore fille game I've ever played, you chainsaw aliens heads off and curve stomp them.

Super Smash Bros sounds like a Bethelite kind of game for sure.

Speaking of Gay porn, haha... I heard that people would be marked as an "NPG" at Bethel if they are to find out that they deal with homosexual desires? NPG meaning "Non-Practicing Gays"?
