Is the "Watchtower Study" = Question and answer a form of brainwashing??

On Sundays study we were always told to keep answers brief and from the paragraph as some brothers would add "other meterial" to their comments. The "correct" answer is right there in the paragraph.

READ QUESTION --------FIND ANSWER IN PARAGRAPH------UNDERLINE/HIGHLIGHT------READ RELATED {not] SCRIPTURE-----RAISE HAND---GIVE ANSWER FROM PARAGRAPH AS THOUGH IT'S YOUR OWN THOUGHT.

Leave the THINKING to us....we have the correct answer. No need to question anything. The question is answered in the paragraph. When you start to think for yourself it's amazing how much crap you find "between the lines" of the Watchtower.

To me, it's a way to make the average JW's think that they're studying the Bible. In reality, they are merely parroting back pre-determined answers in such a way that there is absolutely NO critical thinking involved. It is a means to make the publishers think that they really are having a deep biblical discussion when that is the last thing the Governing Body would want them to do. That is why the formation of any sort of independent study group that JW's have tried to set up has been counseled against. They want to determine any and all brain synapses that are being used by the membership!!!

Absolutely. People will recite anything in the paragraphs even if they don't actually believe them. Its pretty amazing when you step back and observe.

It's a form of brainwashing, maybe brain-relaxing would be a better term.

It's hypnotism. Just lull everyone with the read and repeat beat of the message.

Hear the thought in the paragraph, hear the thought in the question, hear the thought in the answer.

It is brainwashing. It's a question and answer where the JW's are given the answers right in the paragraph. Thinking is the enemy. The Watchtower study eliminates all traces of thinking.

The WTS provides all the questions and requires JWs to parrot WT answers.

And you won't find any of Blondie's questions being asked...

As a kid I never knew where to start and stop underlining since you would just repeat everything you just read, so I would just highlight the entire paragraph.

Yes! If in doubt read Lifton's "Thought Reform." It is exactly the sort of thing he researched.
