I used to mispronounce melancholy. I'd only ever read it, and never heard it.

So in my head it was:

    mel- ank - olee

Until one day I said it out loud and my then sixteen year old sister (fifteen years younger than me) started LHAO! Thankfully, I can laugh at myself.

I once heard an anchorwoman mispronounce emeritus - she said em-me-right-us!

A congresswoman from Texas mispronounced vilified - vy-li-fied.

    Truth.

That word has bad memories for me. When I was in Grade 7, it showed up on a spelling test and I knew how to spell and pronounce it, because I could play "Melancholy Baby" on the piano.

When I said the word out loud, the teacher (who hated JW's, BTW) laughed and made fun of me in front of everybody, because she said it was pronounced :

    Ma lan' chilly

I always wonder if she ever figured out that she was the one pronouncing it wrong.......

Whores devours is hilarious!! People must have raised their eyebrows when you said that. It's good that we can laugh at ourselves!

So, what's the latest on the pronunciation of "err"? I was commended by Don Adams for pronouncing it correctly [rhymes with "fur"], but I gather that it is currently homonymic with "air." Hate it! Much can change in 40 years....

Rhymes with fur in my neck of the woods.

I, too, have heard it pronounced "air."

    Hate it!
