Do you think that the JW religion is a cult? I believe that it is, but I wanted to get other people's opinion.

Well, DUH! Of COURSE I DO!

Seriously, yes. Do a search on cult behavior, JW's fit the bill to a tea.

Sure, because they fit the most common notions of "cult". Check out such notions by looking at Steven Hassan's list of cult characteristics. You can find it somewhere on Randy Watters' website, http:\\www.freeminds.org .

    Yes.
Cult definition:devotion to a person or a thing.
devotion definition: great love or loyalty.
Are the Jw's required to be loyal to the governing body , to the extent that they are not allowed to think diferently?
    They are a cult.

I think some people are put off by the word "cult". So I like to use the word mind control. That is actually what is happening when people can't use their own minds to make decisions or to live freely as they want to. shhheesh. Freedom of religion, not in the mind controlled wtbts! j2bf

I don't think they are. I am not sure but isn't a cult those that follow a man or a teacher, like the Branch Davidians? I believe that Jesus is the head of the congregation.

cults and religions are equally messed, so i don't care what category any organization falls into.

I generally use the term "high control group." Mainly because the WT folks cling to the definition of cults as following a man (see SexyTeen's post)--and thereby let themselves off the hook. The reality is that they've simply substituted a single charismatic leader (i.e., Jim Jones, David Koresh, even Rev. Moon) for a
group of not-so-charismatic but equally controlling men (the governing body, so-called "Faithful & Discreet Slave").

End result is the same, though.
