A Jehovah Witness man, Kwabena Afum and his wife, Margret Afum aka Abena Oduma, have had a brush with the law after creating an unnecessary chaotic scene at New Edubiase Government Hospital in a bid to prevent medical officers from giving blood to their son.

Kwabena Afum was arrested last week Tuesday and granted a police enquiry bail the next day for causing panic and chaos by allegedly mobilizing some members of his church to foment trouble at the hospital.

He has since disowned five-year-old Jepheth Asamoah, who is currently in the custody of the Social Welfare Department in the district, even after his release.

According to Dr. Manye Mensah, Medical Superintendant Officer at the hospital, Jepheth was brought to the hospital on April 25, 2010 in an anaemic weak condition.

He said upon examination, he discovered the young boy had lost lots of blood which needed urgent replacement and therefore decided to stable his condition with a medication and oxygen that did not work.

He told Daily Guide that whilst the patient’s condition appeared stable because of the heamorrhage, he informed the couple about the need for a blood transfusion to replace the lost blood, which the couple resisted, citing their religious belief.

Bent on saving the life of the little boy, the Medical Superintendant indicated that as he and his team began the process of transfusion, Kwabena Afum and some members of Jehovah Witnesses besieged the theatre room in a bid to prevent them from carrying out their professional duties.

The police, upon hearing the story, rushed to the place to restore law and order and arrested the boy’s father in the process.

He has since disowned the poor boy for having received blood, as lawyers from the church intervened and secured his bail.

ASP Ebenezer Benson, New Edubiase District Police Commander, confirmed the arrest as well as the incident to Daily Guide and added that the farmer had been granted bail awaiting prosecution.
Jehovah Witnesses is a millenarian restorationist Christian denomination with non-Trinitarian beliefs distinct from mainstream Christianity.

The religion reports worldwide membership of over 7 million adherents involved in evangelism. They are directed by a governing body of elders which exercise authority on all doctrinal matters. Witnesses base their beliefs on the Bible and prefer their own translation, the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures.

Jehovah’s Witnesses are best known for their door-to-door preaching, distribution of literature such as The Watchtower and Awake! and for their refusal of military service and blood transfusion even in life-threatening situations.

The group emerged from the Bible Students movement, founded in the late 19th Century by Charles Taze Russell, with the formation of Zion’s Watch Tower Tract Society.

Following a schism in the movement, the branch that maintained control of the society underwent significant organizational changes bringing its authority structure and methods of evangelism under centralized control. Since its inception, the Watch Tower Society has taught that the present world order is in its last days and will soon be destroyed by Armageddon. Story from peacefmonline.com News:

"He has since disowned five-year-old Jepheth Asamoah"

How in the world do you disown a 5 year old? This is so sick and twisted. The GB and the rest of the higher ups in the org should be in jail.

I hope a loving Ghana couple will step forward and adopt little Jepheth and give him the unconditional love that every child deserves.

This is the sort of extreme behaviour that can have no justification. In this country a child who needs a transfusion will be given one regardless of the parent's wishes. This does not make the child sinful. A five year old would certainly not be in a position to decline any medical procedure nor would they necessarily understand what a transfusion was.

The question remains how did this small child end up in a position where they had lost so much blood in the first place?

What a dreadful guilt trip to load on an infant, these parents do not deserve their child and perhaps the kindest thing they could have done is give him up. I hope this means his life improves and he doesn't spend the rest of his childhood in an institution. I hope the parents are prosecuted for neglect and abandonment.

I think the word 'disown' is the worldly people's understanding of the watchtower's policy of shunning or disfellowshiping individuals. The child is five years if I am correct. He is too young at this age. Its a classic example of overreaction and fear of the WTS. Believe me, the WTS wields strong , far overreaching influence and control over Africans down there in the South.

In Africa, life is so cheap. If that child is to die, the family can still give birth to another one. One point also I want to mention is that, child bearing practices in Africa represents social security for parents in old ages. In the absence of social security and other social entitlement benefits, too much children takes the place of financial and other material support for their parents in later years.

Shunning generally has less effect on children in Africa context because of the extended family system support. Once shunned, he or she can seek support from brothers,, sisters, uncles, grand mom, etc. Unlike western , developed countries, they readily provides support.

It acts as a soft cushion for the shunned, and as a bulwark against effective shunning only if all extended family members are not JWs which is common.

However,if the child manages to make it to adult hood and may be get blessed materially, its going to be a very big loss for the parents who will not be able to get support of any kind from that once shunned boy.

The watchtower as wicked, manipulative, horrible, cunning, hypocritical, inhuman and uncaring as its, will look the other way around as it has done to many of those who have served it like bethelites then later in old age, or sickness, were kicked out on the curb. What a human tragidy, callousness , insensibility and irresponsibility!

I find it VERY hard to believe that they are disowning their son, but the story IS coming from Africa.... Lots of brutality to go around there. I can imagine the Branch is in a mad dash to do damage control.
