Feb. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Chile was rocked by a magnitude 8.8 earthquake centered 197 miles (317 kilometers) southwest of Santiago. A tsunami warning has been issued across the Pacific.

The quake struck at 3:34 a.m. local time at a depth of 36.9 miles, the U.S. Geological survey said on its Web site.

Santiago residents stood in the street amid fears of new temblors, pictures on CNN+ showed. Electricity, gas supplies and phone lines were down in parts of the country, an emergency official told the broadcaster. The Tsunami Warning Center for Chile and Peru issued alerts that were later extended to Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Antarctica.

Earlier today, a magnitude 7 earthquake hit near Okinawa, Japan, at about 5:31 a.m. local time, the USGS said.

Please check in with us. Warn those on the coast lines.....

A tsunami alert has been generated for Australia's east coast following the earthquake.

"Tsunami waves have been observed on the coast of Chile that may threaten Australia," the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) said.

The BoM said tsunami waves could start affecting Norfolk and Lord Howe Islands after 8:30am (AEDT) on Sunday, NSW could be hit after 8:45am (AEDT) while Queensland could be hit after 8:15am (AEST).

    HAWAII

EWA BEACH, Hawaii -- Hawaii is under a tsunami warning following a massive earthquake that struck central Chile.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also said a tsunami advisory was in effect for the coast of California and an Alaskan coastal island area from Kodiak to Attu.

The center says a tsunami has been generated that could cause damage along coastlines of all islands in the Hawaii. It said a tsunami in California and Alaska was possible.

The Ewa (EH-vah) Beach, Hawaii-based tsunami center says the first waves are expected to arrive at 11:19 a.m. Saturday (4:19 p.m. EST).

The center called for "urgent action to protect lives and property" in Hawaii, which is among 53 nations and territories subject to tsunami warnings.

The largest earthquake ever recorded struck the same area of Chile in 1960. The deadly wave that it caused raced across the Pacific and hit the Hilo area of the Big Island, where 61 people were killed.

This is from the 1960 Chilean EQ that caused tsunami. I am posting this to give you indication of time frame of waves.

The 1960 Chilean tsunami radiated outward from a subduction zone along the coast of Chile. Its waves reached Hawaii in 15 hours and Japan in 22 hours.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning, the highest level of a tsunami alert, for the entire Pacific region, including Hawaii and places as far away as Russia and Japan.

California and Alaska are under a tsunami advisory.

"An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines near the epicenter within minutes and more distant coastlines within hours," the National Weather Service said in a statement.

USGS geophysicist Victor Sardina said several tsunami waves had come ashore along the Chilean coast; the largest was recorded at 9 feet near the quake's epicenter.

"I urge people in coastal zones to move to higher ground," Bachelet said at a morning news conference.

The earliest estimated arrival for a wave that could affect Hawaii was 12:46 a.m. local time (6:46 p.m. ET). But evacuations of coastal areas were to begin at 6 a.m. (12 p.m. ET).

There is a link at above ^^ site where you can follow tsunami warning information.

Current warning information shows the severity as low. When I first posted there was no information available that I could find as far as heighth or speed of wave, so I did not know the "warning level".

    ASIA BRACING

TOKYO — Wide swaths of the south Pacific, Asia and Australia braced for a tsunami after a devastating earthquake hit the coast of Chile on Saturday.

Officials in Japan and Australia warned a tsunami from the earthquake was likely to hit Asian, Australian and New Zealand shores within 24 hours. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii issued a tsunami warning that included the Philippines, Taiwan, Indonesia, and many island nations in the Pacific. A lower-level advisory that a tsunami was possible was issued for northern Pacific locations, including the U.S. West Coast and Alaska.

"Sea-level readings confirm that a tsunami has been generated which could cause widespread damage," the center said in a bulletin after the magnitude-8.8 quake. "Authorities should take appropriate action to respond to this threat."

The center noted that the first waves after a quake are not necessarily the largest and said tsunami wave heights are difficult to predict because they can vary significantly along a coast due to the local topography.

    .....

The Meteorological Agency said it was still investigating the likelihood of a tsunami from the magnitude-8.8 quake and did not issue a formal coastal warning.

Australia, meanwhile, was put on a tsunami watch.

The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for a "potential tsunami threat" to New South Wales state, Queensland state, Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island. Any potential wave would not hit Australia until Sunday morning local time, it said.

The Philippine Institute of Vulcanology and Seismology issued a low-level alert saying people should await further notice of a possible tsunami. It did not recommend evacuations.

These comments are from the Aussie Topix forum:

    -------------------------------

    DETAILS:

Tsunami waves are more powerful than the same size beach waves, with the first
wave not always the largest. First tsunami effects are expected as follows:

Coolangatta - after 08:15 am [EST] Sunday
Maroochydore - after 09:00 am [EST] Sunday
Brisbane - after 09:15 am [EST] Sunday

Do not go to the coast to watch the tsunami.
Check that your neighbours have received this advice.

    ------------------------------

NSW and Sydney are also on alert. We'll wait to see if NZ goes under before moving to higher ground.

    ---------------------------

Apparently the wave was 1.69 meters above sea level at Valparaiso, they don't estimate anything for here that I can find.

    UPDATE for NSW:

    SUMMARY:
Tsunami warning for the marine environment for NEW SOUTH WALES.

Threatened areas extend from Broken Bay to Point Danger.

Possibility of dangerous waves, strong ocean currents and foreshore flooding for several hours from 08:45 am [EDT] Sunday.

Further south from about 8am Sunday for coastal areas from Broken Bay to Gabo Island, there are likely to be unusual currents and tides during Sunday. At this stage, those areas, including the coast and bays around Sydney Harbour, are not considered to be under threat of significant tsunami effects.

Sea level observations HAVE confirmed a tsunami has been generated.

    ----------------------------------------------

coastal towns in Easter island are being evacuated.

    -------------------------------------

"British experts said a tsunami was now radiating from the epicentre towards Hawaii and other settlements on the Pacific Ring of Fire.

The extent of the tsunami's ferocity is not yet known, but it has already reached the southern Juan Fernandez Islands, about 400 miles off the coast of Chile, where it was reported to have caused "serious damage".

"This morning's magnitude 8.8 earthquake close to the Chilean coast has caused a tsunami that is now radiating away from the epicentre and travelling at several hundred kilometres per hour across the Pacific ocean.

"The first waves are expected ot Hawaii at 11:19 Hawaii Standard Time but are also travelling along the South America coast and will reach Colombia and Costa Rica after 1300 GMT."
