Is the Bible Really Scientifically Accurate?

The Society (and others) love to quote Job 26:7 where it says that "[God] suspends the earth over nothing" and Isaiah 40:22, where it speaks of "the circle of the earth". They use these scriptures to boast about the incredible scientific accuracy of the Bible, proving God had a direct hand in everything written in it.

The trouble is that elsewhere in the scriptures, opposing views are put forth explaining then-unexplainable physics and geographical notions. One is Job 26:11: "The pillars of heaven tremble." Another is Isa 11:12, where it talks about "the four corners of the earth." Job 28:24 speaks of "the ends of the earth." Matthew 4:8 has Satan taking Jesus to an "exceedingly high mountain," so high that he can see all the kingdoms of the earth. Job 38:4-6, Ps 104:5, 1 Sam 2:8 all speak about "the foundations of the earth" or the "pillars of the earth."

In all honesty, how can you treat the Bible as an accurate book of science when it misses the mark so often? It's easy to say that when it goes against science it's to be taken figuratively, but when it agrees with science it must be divinely-inspired.

It's easy for a "believer" to say that, but is it intellectually honest?

I always had a problem with the phrase "the circle of the Eart" there is poster here call "asphereisnotacircle" and that says it all. The Bible is not scientific at all, it may have had a couple of lucky hits but as you point out they are a minority compared with the majority of inaccuracies.

It always makes me laugh when the bible talks about god knowing all the stars by name, how many billions of galaxies are there, and how many billions of stars in each galaxy. It is obvious the inspiration for that came from what could be seen by the naked eye and not by a creator!

No, the Bible isn't scientifically accurate. It's a well known fact.

Unfair question because the Bible doesn't claim to be scientifically accurate. Scientific accuracy is a present-day demand.

Sciences changes as knowledge grows through observation. Science can only be accurate as the facts are revealed.

Is the bible scientifically accurate? That's like asking if it's inspired by god. Your answer will depend on who you ask and what evidences you look at or choose not to look at.

It is very accurate if you have the "de-coder" glasses, that way you know what verses are literal and what ones are not literal.

The Bible is not scientifically accurate and it was not even meant to be. Many statements in the Bible are plain wrong scientifically, examples given in the neighboring thread do-you-accept-all-of-the-bible-as-being-100-truth and elsewhere.

In his infamous statement "All scripture is..." (2.T.3:16) St.Paul made a misjudgement. It is understandable that he did: He was misguided by indoctrination that had begun in his early childhood and continued in the jewish theocratic ministry school of that time... as diagnosed by an educated outsider, Festus: "Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad" (Acts.26:24).
