Prison isn't a fun place to be (I'd imagine) so they do reach for that opiate of the masses thing.

I mean before they got there.

Well if the threat of punishment worked 100% of the time we wouldn't need prisons. Now, as to whether everyone that's in prison actually belongs there is a whole nother story.

I do not believe in a God or gods, but I do think that religion (has) serves(ed) as a framework upon which a society can be built. Religion is one of many levers that can be pulled, although it is a big one. Maybe someday we'll outgrow it, but not in my lifetime.

Look how civilized many European nations are SLoon. Atheism is more prevalent. I think religion has done far more harm than good in this world.

Hey here's some beatiful examples of what you can do with god on your side!!

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/may/18/rumsfeld-gq-iraq-bible-quotes-bush

"The sheets juxtaposed war images with inspirational Biblical Quotes and were delivered by Rumsfeld himself to the White House," the magazine said.

It showed eleven covers of the "Worldwide Intelligence Update" mixing Crusades-like messaging with war imagery.

One showed soldiers praying with their machineguns under the quote: "Whom Shall I send, and who will go for us." Under the soldiers' picture is a second quote: "Here I'm Lord, Send Me."

Another cover shows a US aircraft carrier with the quote: "If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me; your right hand will hold me fast, O LORD."

A third cover shows a US tank roared through the desert beneath the quote: "Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand."

A cover with a picture of a US soldier in full arms and behind him a road sign a road sign pointing the direction of Baghdad and Hilla cities has a quote: "Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed."

Another cover with three different pictures of troops also with a road sign pointing the direction of Baghdad and Hilla cities has a quote: "Have not I commanded you? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be you dismayed: for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go."

A cover with pictures of Saddam Hussein and American soldiers and tanks taking positions inside his places has a quote: "God has numbered the days of your reign. You have been weighed on the scales & found wanting. Your Kingdom is divided."

Another showed the statue of Saddam Hussein being pulled down in Firdos Square, a grateful child kissing an American soldier, and jubilant Iraqis thronging the streets of Baghdad. Above the images was a quote from the Bible: "Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him…To deliver their soul from death."

Yes, now, but I'm not saying it's better, it's more like a stepping stone on the way to a more advanced society. Like how we've advanced from groups to a tribe, to city-states, to nation-states, and now on to a more global society. Religion as part of society has followed a similar evolution from shamanistic, to polytheism, to monotheism... to atheism? Religion is simply a part of what has made humanity what it is today.

I do think that humanity could achieve more without the crutch of religion, but are we mature enough as a species to walk without that crutch?

Yes dear, you can do it! Come here, even if you fall, it's not far, it won't hurt... Go ahead................that's it!

Well I can walk fine without it, but being an evil socialist apparently I realize that the needs of the many can outweigh the needs of the few or the one. Lots of people still need to believe in a God, it can give purpose, it's comforting, it creates a societal unity (and conflict). I think it's inevitable that religion will wane, but it will be a slow process. You just can't yank the blankey away and not expect a temprer-tantrum.
