You make a good point. Rutherford attempted to elevate his own importance over that of Russell by saying Jesus did not choose the Organization until after he took over.
The Watchtower response changes depending on the point trying to be made:
- On one hand they say there have always been JWs since Jesus time (ie true christians).
- But then they cannot find any religions that actually believe even vaguely what the Watchtower teaches. So they then say that Russell reawakened the true religion.
- Yet so much of what Russell taught was wrong that they say the cleansing was not until 1919 under Rutherford
- But then so much of what Rutherford taught is no longer believed that they revert to the old "light gets brighter" excuses
