You make a good point. Rutherford attempted to elevate his own importance over that of Russell by saying Jesus did not choose the Organization until after he took over.

The Watchtower response changes depending on the point trying to be made:

    • On one hand they say there have always been JWs since Jesus time (ie true christians).
    • But then they cannot find any religions that actually believe even vaguely what the Watchtower teaches. So they then say that Russell reawakened the true religion.
    • Yet so much of what Russell taught was wrong that they say the cleansing was not until 1919 under Rutherford
    • But then so much of what Rutherford taught is no longer believed that they revert to the old "light gets brighter" excuses

I have an article about this at http://www.jwfacts.com/index_files/5min.htm

As far as I can tell, no matter what you point out about the crazy beliefs from Russell's day, or Rutherford's, or Knorrs, or more recently, they (and we once) were trained to believe that it doesn't matter. They believe that God chose Russell and didn't care about the crazy things he taught and gradually clued the JWs in to the correct understanding of things as time went on. I really believe that only those of us who had started to doubt and question anyway would be impressed by any history of foolishness.

Even though one conversation won't necessarily penetrate a well-doctrined JW, you would be interested to know that CAPTIVES OF A CONCEPT is the book that tackles this 1918-1919 examination of the "one-true-religion." It does an excellent job.

    cawshun,

Your question is a thing of the kind to which people cannot immediately answer, and you can investigate by yourself.

About Russell, his view is different from the current JW.
The current JW is deviation from that doctrine.

Thank you for all helpful information.

Possible-san, thanks for the links, I will look them over and bookmark. I have the book "Captives of a Concept" I think its an excellent book, I was thinking on taking advice from Don Cammeron and see if I could get my son in law to study with me, but ask him to study the history with me first so I can know why it is they believe they are the one true religion. I really have to do my homework.

I have a lot to learn, so I won't be doing this any time soon.

Two more reasons they feel special.....

    • We where the only ones preaching about the kingdom.

    • We where the only group that didnt get involved in the wars.

Both of Warys points of course do not bear scrutiny: "only group preaching"

rubbish,Seventh Day Adv. were, hence they now number TWICE what JW.s do,they would have dwindled to nothing without proseletysing.

    "not involved in Wars"

How about the mags that urged them to buy War bonds?

I would like to see ANY reason that Jesus should have chosen them over other groups in 1918/9 that does stand up to scrutiny!

    cawshun,

Never been a JW but I have done a lot of research on this. My advice is not to try for a grand slam, but instead bunt everytime you get up to bat. You will do better I think by taking one small chip out of the rock at one time. I would stay away from questions that cannot be answered from the Bible (that is WT dogma), and don't expect answers. Over a long period of time try to cast doubt into your son-in-law. It is up to him to start researching the accuracy of WT theology, the best you can do is give him a reason to begin his research.

Jeff Gordon is the NASCAR points leader right now. He has not won a single race. In fact, he leads two other drivers that have each won 2 races (Mat Kenseth 10th and Kyle Busch 4th). Gordon is the leader because he finishes in the top 5 consistantly.

    Just my opinion.

    Another angle.

When Jesus came to inspect the spiritual temple in 1918/1919 and appointed the FDS class 'over all his [earthly] belongings,' they didn't know anything about it. They missed it. Rutherford acknowledged that it was only 'about 1922' that they realised Jesus had made any inspection at all.

AND they had no idea that Jesus appointed a FDS class (it was taught that Russell was 'the faithful and wise servant'). It was only in 1927 when the FDS class doctrine came about.

If the President rewarded a group of people and appointed them over a government department, you'd think he'd tell them at the time rather than let it gradually dawn on them years later.

    Hi, cawshun.

Although I do not know a book called "Captives of a Concept", it looks like a good book.
I hope your good work is successful.

Please maintain a good relation with him, without damaging thepride of your son in law.
Then, he will understand truth someday with your help.

I am glad if the article of my website is helpful to you.
My comment is not added to that article.
I show only the fact, and the person who sees it draws a conclusion.
